The court has suspended the session in which Mada Masr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah’s first hearing on charges of managing an unlicensed website is taking place, with proceedings set to resume later today.
The session’s suspension came after the judge had requested during proceedings that the defense counsel review the case file while the session was ongoing. The counsel refused the request, asking that they be given sufficient time to review the case documents. The judge repeated his request that they review the case file during the session, saying that “the case is simple” and that the charge is the straightforward question of managing a website without a license.
The session is being held at the ninth circuit of the New Cairo Misdemeanor Court, presided over by judge Mohamed Mubarak.
At the start of the session, after the judge presented to Attalah the Supreme State Security Prosecution’s charges, he asked the editor-in-chief if the website was unlicensed at the time of the prosecution’s investigations on October 21. She responded by stressing that she had applied for a license and never received a response.
Before the session began, journalists present at the courthouse were barred from entering to attend the trial, among them Iman Ouf, the Journalists Syndicate’s Freedoms Committee head. Court security asked the journalists gathered outside to hand over their syndicate membership cards, saying the presiding judge wanted to check on those present “name by name.” They later returned the cards without letting anyone in.
Mada Masr’s defense lawyers had asked the judge for full access to evidence in the case, including the facts of the licensing procedures and related notifications, details of the charges Attalah is accused of and the time period over which it is alleged that the crime took place, as well as access to all documentation regarding Mada Masr’s licensing application held by the Supreme Media Regulatory Council.

More info here about the Fairford arrests ...
RAF Fairford update from @TerrorismPolice:
This morning two men have been charged under the National Security Act, following an extensive investigation into activity which took place near RAF Fairford on Sunday 27 September.
Head of National Counter Terrorism Policing in the UK, Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, said:
“Earlier this morning, Nouman Essghir, 24, a British national from the Borough of Westminster, London, was charged under Section 4 of the National Security Act 2023, for suspected activity on Saturday 22 August. He was first arrested at the scene in Gloucestershire on Sunday 27 September, and re-arrested on 20 October.
“Essghir will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court this morning.
“A second man, a 25-year-old dual UK/Iranian national, re-arrested on the same date, has been released without charge. However, he remains on police bail following his first arrest on Thursday 1 October.
“Following the re-arrest of these individuals, detectives also interviewed a further man under caution.
“As a result, Mohammed Abdul Karim, a 24-year-old British national, from the Borough of Westminster, London, has been charged under Section 3 of the National Security Act 2023, which makes it an offence to assist a foreign intelligence service.
“In this case, we believe that country to be Iran. Karim will appear at Westminster Magistrates today.
“The five other men arrested in connection with this investigation, remain on police bail.
“We have seen a range of incidents in recent months that we believe have been directed by the Iranian state, and as the Director General of Mi5 said just the other week, we are working together to intervene, identify and respond to that threat.
“The public can help us with this, and as always, I would urge them to report anything that they’re worried about – those reports can and do make a difference.”

What an embarrassing afternoon for Reform UK.
Farage and Jenrick unveiled their economic plans to a half-empty hall in central London. Asked about the empty seats, Farage first blamed “staff incompetence”, then suggested the businessmen invited were simply too busy to attend.
How disgraceful to publicly humiliate your own staff rather than take responsibility.
An event meant to showcase Reform’s readiness for government instead showed how quickly Farage blames others when things go wrong.
You just know what sort of man he is to work with. If he’s this willing to blame his staff publicly, who knows what kind of behaviour is going on behind closed doors.

The situation in schools re: antisemitism is alarming. One incident is too many. But one can hold that view and critcicise a report that is sloppy, inaccurate and misleading. Producing a slapdash, sub-par report on antisemitism shows a lack of respect for the issue from the author
Replying to @robertshrimsley
That's why they are so keen to rubbish a report on antisemitism in schools. Because they are the ones with the hierarchy.

Breaking: Final Israeli pre-election polls in three major TV channels:
• Netanyahu coalition parties win 50 out of 120 Knesset seats.
• The Bloc for Change gets 52-56 seats.
• Eisenkot favored over Netanyahu as national leader by 6-10% gap.
• The Arab parties (including Abbas’s party Raam with Jewish former police officer and MK Segalovitz) are projected to score about 16 seats.
• Small non-bloc parties may or may not get the threshold of 4 seats.
==> My take:
• Eisenkot and his partners will need the Arab parties to back them; hopefully as full coalition members rather than supportive outsiders.
• The predicted 50 Netanyahu bloc seats are not what I would have liked in the aftermath of 7 October, but not all of its voters are bibists. The ultra Orthodox parties have their separate agenda. Eisenkot’s party scores better than Likud.
• The polls can be very wrong, in either direction. And so much can still happen before and during 27 October.
• The great election odyssey I mentioned in an earlier tweet, 70K Israelis flocking from abroad to vote, is of course not included in the polls.
• For liberal democracy and some horizon for peace, this is probably the last stand. Fingers crossed.

The ‘major report’ has major flaws in it, is in fact an organized attempt to suppress pro-Palestine speech and Palestinians in schools, and Polanski is right to raise questions:

I'm not going to name the school, but the @BBC's coverage of the antisemitism in schools report featured interviews with children from a Jewish school.
Here's the rub, though.
The school's own published curriculum explicitly teaches Zionism, celebrates the establishment of Israel and describes preparing pupils to become "positive advocates for Israel" at university.
It even references bringing in organisations such as StandWithUs to prepare pupils for that advocacy.
Now, let me be absolutely clear. There is nothing wrong with teaching Jewish history, culture or identity. And antisemitism must be challenged wherever it exists.
But when children are actively encouraged to advocate for a particular state, rather than critically examine its history, policies and actions, surely we have to question whether this is education or ideological conditioning?
And here's the staggering hypocrisy.
We're being told that schools must exercise political impartiality when discussing Palestine, while a school can openly describe preparing children to advocate for Israel.
Political impartiality cannot be a principle applied selectively, depending on which side of a conflict children are encouraged to support.
And the BBC has a responsibility to scrutinise that distinction, not simply present children's views without examining the educational environment in which those views have developed.
Children deserve an education that teaches them how to think, not what to think.

CPJ condemns the referral of @MadaMasr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah to trial for operating a website without a license that Egyptian authorities have themselves refused to grant for years. Egypt is weaponizing its media law to punish independent journalism and intensify one of its worst crackdowns on the press in years, which began with the arrest of six Matsdaash journalists. It is long past time for Egypt to end this campaign and allow independent media to report freely.
