New post:
We have a fascinating and candid interview with Tony Radakin who was head of the armed forces 2021-2025.
Covers decisions on Ukraine, the lessons from the UK, the threat from Russia, defence spending and the disaster of military procurement.

I've been in those trenches every month or two for the last four years.
People are tired, they miss their families, they have their frustrations.
But they are there, still holding the line, with full clarity that if they let go, Russia and its tyranny will come to their homes.

The Russian diesel deal stinks. There is nothing redeeming about it. The initial shipment alone is worth nearly half a billion dollars. Under the terms of the deal, the US could eventually give nearly $7 billion to Russia which is over 3 percent of Russia's defense budget. Russia is the side literally striking kindergartens with drones and missiles. Ukraine will pay for this in blood. We cannot credibly ask and demand that other countries make sacrifices to isolate Russia while cutting deals that sustain its war economy.

Polish defence minister Kosiniak Kamysz postpones his meeting with Hegseth after “urgent request from the US side” as “following signals from the American … it is now urgently necessary to undertake new actions concerning the security of the Alliance's member states.”
Będą prowadzić rozmowy z amerykańskimi partnerami i przygotowywać kolejne umowy dot. naszej współpracy.

Supplying Taurus would be the correct response. it would be a clear, proportionate and linked response to constant Russian aggression towards Germany. When in 2023 Russia started firing Kh-47M2hypersonic & 3M-54 Kalibrcruise missiles into Ukraine i authorised the supply of Storm Shadow. We summoned the Russian Defence Attache and clearly explained why and that it was directly linked to Russian escalation. They didn’t like it but they understood it. If every time Germany is attacked by Russia it does nothing Putin the bully will keep doing it. @BILD @larisamlbrown @haynesdeborah

🙏 Two Ukrainian soldiers suffered open fractures after a successful assault. During the evacuation of ground drone, FPV drone attacked, and the wounded soldiers were left in the open air.
Seeing this, Vladyslav Polsky, the commander of the assault company of the 475th regiment "Code 9.2", even without a body armor, got into a pickup truck and went after them at high speed.
🫡He single-handedly reloaded the wounded from the damaged drone and took them to a safe place, saving the lives of his fighters.
Sam Cook, @kriegsforscherD, and I recorded another episode of the Ukraine Military History podcast. We discuss the situation on the battlefield, deep strikes, Starlink, why armor and artillery are still important, Ukraine’s strategy, and why we haven’t reached a turning point yet.

@FnahtanoJ you will love Geronimo which has just come out for PCVR. Still early and lots to work on, but the most promising VR tactical shooter I've seen. It's got a lovely KS1 in it

Indeed, the £15bn uplift announced today, which is spread over 4 years, represents a 5.3% increase in the previously announced defence budget. With general inflation running at 3.1% in May, this is perhaps a 2% real terms uplift. It has therefore taken the govt over a year since the Strategic Defence Review to come up with a 2% real uplift in defence spending. Total public expenditure in the 2026/27 fiscal year is planned to be £1,416bn. The £15bn uplift in defence spending announced today annualises at £3.75bn. That means the govt - with the stated aim of putting the country onto a war footing - has managed to transfer 0.26% of its total annual expenditure to defence. We are not governed by serious people.
