The longer I coach, the more I realize that the secret to being a great coach isn't designing cutting edge training, it's the ability to repeatedly and consistently avoid doing dumb stuff.

The central idea of Feed the Cats is simply “prioritize speed”. Two words. @BrendanThompsn sums it up perfectly with 34 words. 💥 Without speed, strength & endurance don't matter 💥 Without health, speed doesn't matter 💥 Without relationships, nothing matters 💥 Build the entire schedule around high performance days 💥 Strength fits in AROUND speed to support it, not supercede it

XC kids end the season feeling invincible. Then track pace shows up and the Injury Mirage hits like a pop quiz. “Coach, why does my lower… upper… side-leg hurt?” “What muscle is this?” “Was this body part always here?” XC hides a lot. Track exposes everything. It’s not injury. It’s discovery. They’re just meeting muscles they didn’t need at 5K rhythm. A lot of early track ‘injuries’ are really exposure problems, not damage. Welcome to the awkward in-between season.

For the Track coach: One way to instantly gain a competitive edge is to work on things that genuinely interest you. The person who is having fun has a better chance of winning because they are more likely to stick with it when things get challenging. @JamesClear

🚨TRACK TRUTH🚨 It’s such an amazing sport because of how quick it can humble you. And if you don’t have any humility you won’t see growth. The 5 events that I think humble people most: - shot put - 100m - 1 mile - long jump - high jump

Former WIAA student-athlete Kenny Bednarek continues to tear it up on the track! He just claimed the Men’s 100M National Title with a personal best! 💨 In high school, Kenny racked up 7 WIAA State Titles and still holds 3 State Records. Now, he's a 2x Olympic Silver Medalist and still rising. 👏 #OnceAChampionAlwaysAChampion #WIAAProud
USATF Championships ✅ What a weekend. Five rounds across two events, a new personal best, my first national title and a spot on Team USA in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. This sport has a way of testing you. Last year humbled me, but it also made me sharper. Every setback became a lesson, and every race this season has been part of the climb back. To leave Eugene with a national title and a 9.79 on the clock means a lot, but I’m not done. I came up just short in the 200m final, but I’m happy with the performance and ready for the next one. I’m healthy, locked in and grateful for every step of this journey. Next stop: Poland 100m Aug 16th. Then we go to war in Tokyo ⚔️

Dreams really do come true.🥇 After three strong rounds in the 100m, I came out on top as the National Champion, made the US team, and set a new personal best of 9.79. Last year taught me perseverance, how to face tough losses, make the right adjustments, and come back stronger. Every race this season has been a step closer to my goal of becoming the greatest, fastest athlete this sport has ever seen. I’ve done the work, trusted my coach, and reminded myself that I belong here. Tomorrow, I’ll step onto the track calm and controlled. I know what needs to be done to finish what I started. Watch me fly.

All training is experimental. If you subscribe to a program and “trust the process”, you are not growing as a coach. Learn to cook, don’t follow a recipe.

Just missed the top spot but proud of my teammates for getting that Silver Medal and Qualifying. I split two of the fastest times in the Semis & Final. Clean exchanges & the races felt effortless. Felt good to deliver when it counted. Taking this speed to Tokyo for World Champs!

And the final 100m will hurt like hell even if you run a thousand miles to prepare.

Generally, we can predict 400 time as 2(200 PR)+4. If an athlete runs 24, its a fool's errand to get them to sub-50 through endurance work. The speed just isn't there. Work on speed. Get them to sub 23. Teach them to race aggressively. Your time will be much better spent.

🚨UNPOPULAR OPINION🚨 Athletes IN-SEASON don’t need to be going to workouts for their OUT OF SEASON sport. You on basketball, you aren’t needed at soccer or football or baseball. You at football, you aren’t needed at lax or wrestling. Focus on your current sport and team.

🚨PARENTS🚨 Results may not be coming quickly because athletes are DOING TOO MUCH. If they’re on the track team practicing every day, then 3 soccer practices after, a meet on a weekday+Saturday, then soccer game on Sunday… Yeah… results you expect will not be showing by up🤷🏿‍♂️

Thanks to all those who wished me luck with my first-ever presentation on teaching: "Coach the Classroom". Hopefully I will have more opportunities. Topics: 1) Teach like your class is not mandatory. 2) Compete and teach competition. Win the classroom! 3) Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. 4) Make your class the best part of a kid's day. 5) FTC Endless Feedback Loop (teachers reflect their classroom and the classroom reflects the teacher). 6) Essentialism, Effectiveness, & Simplicity 7) Build your own house (and teach your students to build theirs). 8) Don't be an adult who hates kids (Reality Check). 9) Be loyal. Be rebellious. 10) Don't be chained to the curriculum. 11) Wooden's 8 Laws of Learning 12) Engineer your grading system to prevent failing. 13) Your best students hardly need you. (The difficult ones need you terribly.) 14) Who do you work for? Where is your allegiance? 15) Gamify 16) Make a profit every day. 17) What we can learn from "The Gauntlet". 18) Rules & Consequences 19) Career Education 20) My favorite word: ENCOURAGE (to give courage).

🚨PLAN IT OUT🚨 For MA Indoor 2025, this may be you: - 9 Weekend Invites - 6 Dual Meets - 3 Championship Meets 18 potential total meets. YOUR BEST ATHLETES SHOULD NOT RUN THEM ALL. For me personally: - 3 to 4 duals - All Championships - 1 MAYBE 2 weekends QUALITY>QUANTITY

🚨PARENTS🚨 Yes, growing up your child should play multiple sport. BUT NOT BE ON 3 DIFFERENT TEAMS IN THE SAME SEASON The chance of injury goes up significantly, especially as they get older. Too many chefs in the kitchen is bad. One sport per season. One team per season.

Rice Lake's Carter Kucko and Clara Drost each qualified for the cross country state championships during today's Division 2 sectional held in Rice Lake on the UW-Eau Claire — Barron County campus. Kucko was second in the boys race, and Drost placed ninth among girls.
