Everyone can get faster. Genetics may dictate the ceiling, but proper training is what gets you closer to hitting it!
“My kid just isn’t fast.” Speed is a skill. You can coach sprint mechanics, force production, and acceleration. Most kids have never been taught how to run. That’s the opportunity.

Certainly something I have observed over the years. Thoroughbreds need more rest and significantly less volume.

I have a jump mat, and I love it. But you don't need a jump mat to get a digital readout. You can test CMJ or vertical with a single OVR timing gate and a Google Sheets formula by measuring air time. Put air time in A1. Then put this formula in B1. =((A1^2)*(9.81)/8)*39.3701

Good.

I always knew I liked this guy! If your weather and facilities allows it, absolutely no reason not to be spiked up, on the track, sprinting at top speed TODAY. Develop a base of speed and power now. Build other qualities on top of it later. And don't make sprinters jog!
Things that are still part of College Coaching Culture in the US that make no sense to me (speed power events) -we spend the fall running miles -we do long to short and focus on tempo -we dont sprint until Dec -we dont start jump tech until Dec -we dont put spikes on until Dec

As @pntrack and @KulaPerformance both talk about, you don't need lots of aerobic work to build fitness. You can get athletes fit by stacking high-intensity anaerobic work. Here's a circuit we use to do just that: 🧵

5x5 Hurdle Hops 5x 20 Bungee-Resisted Accelerations 5x5 Box Jumps 10x Medicine Ball Chest Pass Following each exercise, perform a single wicket sprint on the turf/grass/track/whatever you have. Walk back, give adequate rest, and move on to the next exercise.

The result is a longer duration of elevated heart rate without ever doing anything slow. Each exercise is meant to emphasize speed, power, or explosiveness. The wickets reinforce technique. The best part is, kids like it. At least, a lot better than they like tempo repeats!

If you're a high school kid and someone says you can't run sub-50 (boys) or sub-60 (girls) in the 400 without a bunch of endurance and over-distance work, they're lying to you (or don't know any better). You can, and you never have to sprint more than 200 meters in practice.

Feeling myself a little, because I jumped onto a 40 inch box yesterday at Speed Club with the kids. What an athlete. An unbelievable physical specimen.

Offseason sprinting doesn't have to be complicated. Pick some workouts. Cycle through. 3x 40 Y Dash 5x 30 M Hills 3x 10 M Fly 5x Wickets Speed-Power Circuit Pair with plyometrics each day. Done in an hour or less. Stack high quality outputs and watch the results pile up.

Tested this out yesterday. Thread on my profile.
Quick question for anyone who has switched from Freelap to OVR: how are you setting up your 40 yard dash so your times are comparable to your historical Freelap data? Thanks!
402
I tested @freelap and @OVRPerformance simultaneously for 40 yard dash yesterday in order to see how the two times compared. I wanted to know if the new system (OVR) would yield comparable times to Freelap so my compiled year-over-year data remained relevant. 🧵

The athlete ran three attempts. The results are below, presented as the Averaged Freelap Time / OVR Time Rounded to the Tenth of a Second. Rep 1: 4.935 / 4.93 Rep 2: 4.875 / 4.87 Rep 3: 4.835 / 4.86

So, great news! The times are awfully darn close to one another -- close enough that, for my purposes, any new data collected with OVR is still meaningfully comparable to old data collected with Freelap. I'll run the same test with 10 M fly at a later time.
