MAYBE I WAS WRONG ABOUT BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY I wrote about how I always used to make fun of the guys who said things like "Bitcoin is speculative, but the underlying blockchain technology is interesting." And now I think maybe they kinda had a point.

Bitcoin can rally 10%, and you can still lose money betting on Bitcoin volatility. Sounds counterintuitive, but there’s a difference between betting on BTC’s price and betting on how much uncertainty the options market expects. And @HyperliquidX now has a market for trading that second exposure directly. @volmexfinance’s BVIV perpetual, deployed through @Markets_xyz by @Kinetiq_xyz, tracks Bitcoin’s 30-day implied volatility. The concept is pretty straightforward: > BTC perpetual: You’re trading Bitcoin’s price direction. > BVIV perpetual: You’re trading changes in the market’s expectations of Bitcoin volatility. These two positions can perform very differently, even during the same market event. Imagine BTC rallies 10% after a major announcement, but implied volatility falls because the uncertainty surrounding that announcement has disappeared. Bitcoin goes up, but your volatility position loses money. Here’s how that could play out with $1,000 of entry notional: Scenario 1: BTC rallies, volatility falls > BTC +10% = +$100 > BVIV falls from 40 to 32 = -$200 Scenario 2: BTC falls, volatility rises > BTC -10% = -$100 > BVIV rises from 40 to 50 = +$250 These are simplified examples, excluding funding, trading costs and liquidation. The bigger opportunity here is that traders can express views on volatility without necessarily predicting Bitcoin’s direction. For example, an options seller exposed to rising implied volatility could potentially hedge part of that risk using BVIV. Someone expecting a major event to increase uncertainty could buy volatility without choosing whether BTC breaks higher or lower. And someone expecting uncertainty to disappear after an event could take the opposite position. But there’s a catch. Being right about Bitcoin experiencing a large price movement doesn’t automatically mean a volatility trade will be profitable. If the options market already expects an even larger move, implied volatility can decline after the event, regardless of how dramatically BTC moves. You’re not trading realized price movement directly. You’re trading changes in the market’s pricing of expected volatility. There’s also the question of market structure. BVIV is a calculated volatility index, while the perpetual itself trades on an order book with funding payments, collateral requirements and liquidation risk. So liquidity, execution costs and the price of maintaining a position can all affect the outcome. And unlike buying a conventional option, a leveraged volatility perpetual doesn’t provide a premium-limited maximum loss. What I find compelling is the broader development in onchain derivatives. For years, most crypto derivatives activity revolved around taking leveraged directional exposure to an asset. Now we’re seeing products that let traders isolate specific financial risks instead. That’s a different category of market. The opportunity isn’t simply another perpetual contract on Hyperliquid. It’s the possibility of building deeper markets around volatility, hedging and risk transfer. Whether BVIV becomes a meaningful trading market will depend on sustained liquidity, competitive execution and whether traders can maintain these positions economically. …. My Take: I like the direction this is heading. Crypto derivatives need more ways to hedge risk beyond simply going long or short an asset. But BVIV’s real test isn’t whether traders find the concept appealing. It’s whether the market develops enough liquidity to make hedging volatility cheaper and more reliable than existing alternatives.

Options account for ~58.9% of all BTC derivatives open interest. The numbers (as of Oct. 15, 1 PM ET): • $36.0B across all US BTC ETF options ($34.9B in IBIT) • $76.0B across ETF and crypto-native BTC options combined • $129.0B across BTC options and futures (perpetuals and dated futures) combined While perpetuals trade higher volumes, Bitcoin and IBIT options have become central for trading Bitcoin derivatives risk. This is a structural shift in Bitcoin markets.

options are probably THE way for asymmetric bets and I am personally paying more and more attention during low / "cheap" vol times haven't really pushed big options trade yet but feels like it will happen at some point in coming months funnily talked on stream about portfolio construction including perps, spot, options in case you're interested: youtu.be/9Kilhq_jAIw
$BVIV is at 41, below its 1-year avg of 44.6. Phases like this are when experienced traders look at volatility, not just direction: entries are potentially cheap, and the upside is asymmetric. Low implied vol keeps premiums down. A pullback in $BTC pushes upside strikes further out of the money on top of that. Calls get cheaper on both counts. August is the reference. On Aug 18, $BVIV closed at 36.7 with $BTC at $64.7K. Three days later $BTC was at $78.3K and BVIV at 46. OTM calls bought before the move gained from the price move and the repricing of vol at the same time. @koolkrypto223 was positioned for exactly that on Derive. The trade-off stays the same. Most deep OTM calls expire worthless, the premium is the maximum loss, and that is why these positions should be sized responsible.
