I have never accepted the false binaries the culture demands.
Star Trek or Star Wars.
Kirk or Picard.
Beatles or Stones.
Trek, Kirk, Beatles, by the way.
But I love them all.
Captain Picard is my captain because the Next Generation is my Star Trek. Not my first Star Trek. Not my favorite Star Trek. But it is the Star Trek of my time, and it is full of all of the things -- good and bad -- that define my youth.
It is optimistic and charitable, sometimes to a fault. It is self-assured and confident, sometimes to a fault. It believes in the future and it believes in people, sometimes to a fault.
But I have to say, it was a better outlook than the one that permeates today.
May we find our way forward to the best ideas of our past, not forgetting the lessons we've learned along the way, but without the pessimism and nihilism that have accompanied those lessons.
As the good captain once told us: "Things are only impossible until they’re not."

I know people are worried about fuel prices. And I get it. You get to the pump, watch the numbers climb, and wonder why it's costing so much more than it used to.
The reality is that global events are pushing up costs, and families here at home are feeling the impact.
But I won't accept that there's nothing I can do to help.
That's why from today, you'll be able to see petrol and diesel prices on Google Maps, compare nearby stations and find the cheapest option before you fill up.
It's a small change, but if there's a practical way to help people keep more money in their pocket, I'll do it.
