New scam out there watch your DM's
DO NOT RESPOND!
Hi? Uh, I reached out to you because I was scammed here on X by someone using a profile similar to yours. Unfortunately, due to the confusion, I mistakenly thought it was you and ended up reporting your account instead of the scammer’s. I even asked my friends to report your account as well. I’m truly sorry for the trouble this has caused it was never my intention
This DM is a known scam. It's not a genuine "oops" moment. Why it's a scam:
The exact wording ("I was scammed here on X by someone using a profile similar to yours... mistakenly thought it was you and ended up reporting your account... asked my friends to report... truly sorry") is a copy-paste template being used right now by scammers. Multiple people reported the same message in the last few days
The goal is almost always the next step: They'll reply asking you to "verify" your account, click a fake X support link, join a Discord "help server," or log in somewhere to "cancel the reports." That's when they steal your credentials or try to phish you.
thanks @elonmusk by the way for doing such a "GREAT" job of keeping the bots off this platform
The rules didn't change because they were never actually complicated.
Don't click random links.
Don't give strangers your password.
Don't wire money to princes.
Same threats, same fixes, forever.
