Isn’t it odd that when your favorite store offers a 40% sale, people rush in, eager to capitalize on the deal, yet when the stock market offers similar discounts, there’s hesitation & worry? Tesla stock is currently trading at a -40% discount from its all time high of $414.49 hit on November 4, 2022 and usually such a significant markdown would be seen as a golden opportunity in a consumer setting, but why is there a differing mentality with stocks? This difference in mentality largely stems from fear, uncertainty, and doubt. In a store, the value of an item is tangible & immediate, but stocks are abstract & their future value uncertain. On top of this, emotions, news, and market sentiment amplify these anxieties. Whereas a discounted item in a store promises immediate gratification, a discounted stock offers no such guarantee, making investors wary even if the fundamentals remain strong. The stock market, by its nature, is influenced by emotions, news, and sentiment. But those truly successful in the investing world often see these moments not as times of panic, but as unique opportunities. Historically, the market has had its ups and downs, but over the long term, it trends upwards, especially with generational companies (e.g. Tesla, Apple). Embracing a mindset that views these “stock sales” with the same enthusiasm as any other discount for your favorite product will prove to be a life changer for you in the long run. A huge part of becoming a successful investor is all about perspective: where you/I see potential & opportunity, while others see danger. Don’t be afraid.
