Sorry to hear this. The computer industry is so young that so many of its pioneering giants have still been with us. But that era is fading away. reuters.com/technology/adobe…

Re: Apple Vision Pro pricing: Back in 1981, my father paid the equivalent of $10,000 in 2023 dollars for a loaded TRS-80 Model III. His employer did foot the bill. But it still reminded me of how pricey the earliest PCs were.

The launch of ChatGPT Plugins is one of the most significant platform offerings ever. Embedding, distribution, utility.
And it reminds me of @DanB ‘s Cornucopia of the Commons essay where the act of using the database adds value to it. bricklin.com/cornucopia.htm

Object to the pizza used here as an example. Pizza is probably the most balanced of fast feeds with fairly decent nutritional value.

He discusses what he's learned from his blog, and two things stand out for me:
"Writing is one of the best forms of learning." So true. I never fully understand a topic until I've written about it.

Lots of juicy bits in here as @jaygoldberg and I discuss architecture battles and how there is a shift (driven by intense competition) away from general-purpose silicon and to purpose-built silicon.
Check out @T_h_e_Circuit if you haven't already.

But everything changed, when serial founder @Bill_Gross introduced cost-per-click ads in GoTo.com in 98. Gross rightfully once said he's "wildly proud of coming up with the paid-search model".
$GOOG copied it (AdWords) in 2002 and turned profitable right away.

Im happy to support this tribute to Leonard Nimoy. Star Trek & Spock nurtured my interest in science & technology and inspired aspects of my startups: Wildfire, the first voice based personal assistant & Android (likely the OS for the tricorder in 2265). You can also contribute!
Breaking news! We just received confirmation that the Museum of Science in Boston, is getting a major contribution from the co-founder of Android to support the creation of the Leonard Nimoy Memorial Sculpture. Thank you for your generous donation! @richminer @nimoycopdfilm

Congrats from Germany, Dan. I remember very nicely „Bricklin on Technology“ I read some years ago and that I‘m referencing all the time to my students

I heard him say that! But there was more to it. Going to 8-bit bytes implied 32-bit words—what would the missing 4 bits do to floating point precision? It took a *lot* of measurement, simulation, and analysis to conclude that things would still work well.

Sad news from @unccs — Fred P. Brooks, the founder and long-time chair of the department (and a major influence on my professional outlook) passed away a few hours ago.
