Nights like this is why I can never ever ever listen to people who shill for Dictators. Democracy? Too good. It's slow sometimes but we get to avoid messy alternatives that way more disruptive.

79 years of messy, chaotic, disorderly, unbroken democracy. Nobody had to die. No labour camps. There were famines, yes, but none induced by the stupidity of a single dictator. Some Prime Ministers were more strong-willed than others (Nehru, Indira Gandhi) but still within the democratic framework. Thank you India for once again proving my argument that of many others that democracy can lift Nigerians out if poverty and that you're truly the right template for Nigerian development

The murder of a child is a pain no parent should have to endure, let alone from thousands of miles away. Javits Frimpong’s mother deserves to say goodbye to her son in person. I just got off the phone with President Trump and he has agreed to grant her visa immediately.  All of New York City is mourning this tragedy.

We might have our difficulties here in Africa, especially in Ghana, but one thing I will always pride myself on is how we were brought up as children, even in rough and tough neighbourhoods. Murder is a big deal out here. It’s almost alien to us because whenever something like that happens, it becomes major news. We announce and discuss almost every single case in the media, and as a people, we are always shocked and saddened by it. But it seems to have become an almost regular thing in some parts of the West, which makes it scary for my people to feel safe out there. I honestly don’t know what kind of upbringing shapes children to become so evil. I think some of my fellow Black brothers and sisters out there need to do better when it comes to raising their children and instilling the right values in them. It’s very unfortunate that we had to lose Javits this way. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Sending love, prayers and strength to the family, especially his mum and dad. My deepest condolences. ❤️

Look, I get that people are pissed about this thing—there’s a lot to be mad about. But I was raised by a civil servant, and time and again, I’ve learned that systems collapse gradually, not all at once. Nobody shows up on their first day of work and decides to destroy archives or anything. Quite often, it’s a series of small decisions, small things we let fester here and there. Culture is whatever a system rewards or punishes. But the thing about Nigeria is that while we’re always late to one party (the things we’ve lost are lost), I think it’s important to know we’re also always early to another. So much has been lost, but so much can still be done. And it doesn’t have to be big things; just pick the little things. For example, if someone in your family was a teenager when Nigeria became independent, statistically, they might be dead in a decade or way less. Sit with them and press record; they have so much to say, and so few people willing to listen. Just listen and press record. In whatever language they understand, no matter how little your understanding of it. Keep the family album. Use your phone to photograph them. Keep the tapes. Much of what our civilisation learned about fighting COVID-19 came from what we learned about the Spanish Flu of 1918: a mix of official records documenting death rates, etc., and personal correspondence that captured the experience of living through it. Personal history is family history is national history.
Replying to @ogbeniseyi
Less than two decades ago, they moved a new Oga to NTA Lagos, and to make room for them, they emptied the tape storage and converted it into an office. Rain beat the tapes to decay.

Imagine your kids are starving with no clothes, and as a father you buy a 65-inch TV so they can watch Cocomelon in HD. That's exactly what this government is doing.

I’m not saying you should read this longer essay I wrote on it last year but I put in a lot of effort into it including translating so many mandarin source texts. There is simply too much of this nonsense in Nigeria and across Africa. It is the critical difference between the continent and Asia and explains so much of the poverty you see. Without this, you’re just growing without any development whatsoever. 1914reader.com/p/the-men-who…

It's important that Western culture continues to be the dominant global culture, not Chinese or any other culture.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Mao Zedong is under any single social metric a dictator. Not a single popular election, single government party and lifetime leadership. Not even taking into account the millions of deaths under his reign. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mao_Zedong
