Labour has fallen for the two dumbest Remoaner myths. Soaring immigration and a decrepit economy have nothing to do with Brexit. They have everything to do with weak politicians who are terrified of UK sovereignty, says Patrick West

The conspiracy theory Marr drops in here is a beguiling one.
The Telegraph, consistently Britain's most effective Eurosceptic voice, purchased by staunchly pro-EU German media conglomerate just as Labour government launches bid to get Britain back into the EU.
First move is to cull the paper's most popular, anti-Establishment, Eurosceptic voices and present an implausible plan to turn what is one of the country's foremost newspapers into a global AI whatever.
Why would you spend half a billion quid buying a national newspaper in order to turn it into something else? The value in the Telegraph is its relationship with audience, which this purchase is evidently looking to destroy.
It makes no sense to me, but then I'm not a global media executive.
Some hacks on the Telegraph believe that Mathias Döpfner, the CEO of Axel Springer, is barely aware of what has been going on, having delegated affairs to the London management. But if he intends to return and smooth things out, he’s going to need to move quickly. I don’t mean any of this as a sob story. Many will pitch up on rival papers or start successful independent online writing of their own.
They do not hold political views with which the current writer agrees. But there is a wider story here about the gutting of distinctively British political culture. The Telegraph once mattered to the wider Conservative family in much the same way that the Guardian did to Labour and Liberal Britain: they, as much as the parliamentary parties, were where ideas were thrashed out and reputations made or destroyed.
Naturally, in a globalised digital media environment, the temptation to go international is a big one. But when the Springer manifesto says it wants to turn the paper into a global business driven by AI and “built on trusted journalism [and] direct relationships with our audiences”, one wonders how this chimes with the mass sackings. Given how many “trusted journalists” with direct relationships with Telegraph audiences are currently being put down, perhaps humanely, in clubs around Piccadilly, it reads rather oddly.

Chagos handover deal is in doubt: PM says UK govt will "recast the arrangement" to allay US concerns.
He sees the US-Denmark deal over Greenland as one possible model for the fate of Diego Garcia.
I wonder if there is anything central govt can do to stop this sort of lunacy? Put restrictions on funding unless only local issues are addressed perhaps, because this is a grim situation for the council taxpayers of the area…

Chagos is the key to it all
Starmer and Hermer's rotten deal to give Chagos and £billions of UK taxpayers' money to Mauritius has opened the door to a World of hurt for the UK.
The election of 🧧Professor Dapo Akande to the International Court of Justice swings that door wide open.
🧧Professor Akande, who backs the Chagos deal, has trained lawyers, diplomats, military officers, and other UK government officials in international law, including officials from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
A powerful, mainly unelected group with strong connections to the FCDO is deeply involved in pushing the Chagos deal.
🧧Antonia Romeo, the Cabinet Secretary who advised Burnham to continue Starmer's treacherous Chagos deal, has held major senior positions in the FCDO.
🧧Jonathan Powell, the National Security Advisor, who also pressed Burnham hard to continue with the Chagos deal, for which he was Keir Starmer's Special Envoy, had a long high-profile career at the FCDO, which funded his private consultancy company.
🧧Vijay Rangarajan, who led the civil service team during the Chagos negotiations with Mauritius, was FCDO Director.
🧧Nishi Dholakia, who was appointed Commissioner for the British Indian Ocean Territory (aka Chagos) in December 2024; was previously Deputy Director at the FCDO, and trade counsellor at the Beijing Embassy.
In common with Vijay Rangarajan and Nishi Dholakia, 🧧Uma Kumaran MP, the current Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Overseas Territories and Caribbean Under-Secretary of State in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, is of Indian heritage.
70% of Mauritius' population is of Indian origin.
The FCDO is responsible for British International Investment, which was formerly known as the Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC).
In 2010 the CDC was accused of using Mauritius-registered front companies to avoid paying millions of dollars in taxes on its mineral operations in Senegal and violating its own investment code. See Africa Confidential article below 👇for more details
Mauritius has a long history of political corruption and money laundering.
In 2025 Mauritius' corruption index fell from 51 to 48, signaling a setback in the battle against corruption on the island.
Both Mauritius Prime Ministers, Navin Ramgoolam and Pravind Jugnauth, who negotiated the Chagos deal with Keir Starmer have been arrested on serious money-laundering and corruption charges in the their time.
