💭“Why is the change resulting from having more women in positions of power not proportional to the increase in the number of women in positions of power?
— Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, Speaker of Parliament of Uganda (2011–2021)
Across Africa, women have made significant gains in leadership and decision-making. Yet, representation alone does not guarantee influence over decisions that shape their lives.
📌Women at the table is the start, not the goal. Their presence must translate into power to influence decisions, shape policies and set priorities. This is especially critical for women affected by conflict and displacement, whose experiences and priorities are often overlooked in peace processes.
Join our policy dialogue on 30 October as we explore how to ensure conflict- and displacement-affected women have a meaningful role in shaping the decisions that affect their lives, their communities and their future.

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) will today, 21October 2026 convene a virtual Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government to consider issues aimed at strengthening SADC institutions and advancing regional integration agenda.
His Excellency President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa of the Republic of South Africa will chair the Extraordinary Summit in his capacity as the Chairperson of SADC.
Deliberations at this Summit, which is the highest policy-making institution of SADC, will build on discussions and decisions arising from the 46th SADC Summit which was held in Durban, South Africa, in August 2026.
The Extraordinary Summit will be preceded by the meeting of the SADC Council of Ministers to be chaired by Honourable Ronald Lamola, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa and Chairperson of the SADC Council of Ministers.
The decisions and outcomes of the Extraordinary Summit will be disseminated through SADC’s official communication platforms at the end of the Summit.

3.7 million people have fled South Sudan and the DR Congo for neighbouring countries. Uganda hosts more than 1.7 million of them.
For many women and girls, the impact of war does not end when they leave home or cross a border.
Displacement brings new dangers:
🔶Heightened risk of violence and exploitation
🔶Loss of livelihoods
🔶Limited access to justice and essential services
🔶Exclusion from the decisions that shape their lives and communities
Policies and programmes exist to respond to conflict, displacement and protection needs. Yet the women living these realities are rarely involved in shaping the decisions meant to serve them.
This October, during #WPS Month, we highlight the urgent need for sustained action to ensure that women affected by conflict are meaningfully involved in decisions about their protection, participation and future.
📍Join us for our policy dialogue, "Women at the Center of Peace Processes."

The question is not merely what we can achieve by 2045, but what Africa must become by 2063.
Today, our technical engagement with the @GatesAfrica in Nairobi, Kenya, explored how our institutions can maximise their collective impact.
Guided by the leadership of our CEO H.E. @nardosbthomas, represented by Director @SymerreGrey, we reflected on a sobering timeline: approximately 19 years remain until the Gates Foundation’s planned closure in 2045, while Agenda 2063 has approximately 37 years remaining.
These are not simply dates on a calendar. They are a critical window to transform collaboration and partnerships into tangible, sustainable and resilient African capabilities—capabilities that endure beyond institutional and funding cycles.
Our AUDA-NEPAD and the Gates Foundation share a commitment to improving lives. Our challenge is to align our distinct mandates, harness artificial intelligence to sharpen decision-making, avoid duplication and measure partnership by its tangible impact on African people.
Our discussions focused on health security and the local manufacturing of health products, @_AfricanUnion inter-agency coordination, health investment and financing, health and nutrition standards, nursing and midwifery, digital health innovation, and the Africa Critical Skills Bank.
The imperative is clear: mobilise resources, improve spending efficiency and translate these priorities into investments that strengthen Africa’s health economy.
At the centre of it all is human capital.
What does development mean if it cannot give a child a healthier beginning, equip a nurse to save lives, empower young people with meaningful opportunities and enable Africa to shape its own future?
History will not measure our legacy by the institutions we preserve, but by the lives transformed, the capabilities built and the opportunities secured for generations we may never meet.
The next step is decisive implementation: turning the priority actions identified into measurable progress before our next engagements, ahead of the African Festival of Arts, Culture and Creatives (AFESTACC) and Industrial Skills Week Africa.
Africa’s future will not be inherited. It will be built deliberately, collectively and with urgency.

Women at the Centre of Peace Processes: Bringing the Voices of Conflict-Affected and Displaced Women into Women, Peace and Security Decision-Making
Peace processes cannot fully address women’s realities when the women living through conflict and displacement are excluded from decisions about their protection, rights and future.
@TheWIPCentre, in partnership with @IMatterCampaign, is convening a cross-border policy dialogue that brings together conflict-affected and displaced women, policymakers, and Women, Peace and Security actors across the Great Lakes region to share experiences, identify gaps in protection and participation, and develop practical recommendations to ensure women’s priorities inform peace processes and decision-making.
Join us in advancing peace processes that recognise women not only as victims affected by conflict, but also as rights holders, peacebuilders and decision-makers✊

Africa’s development journey is built through partnerships that turn shared ambition into collective action.
Today, our AUDA-NEPAD and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, @DIRCO_ZA convened a Joint Retreat to deepen our strategic partnership and advance South Africa’s contribution to Africa’s development agenda.
Building on the outcomes of our 2024 engagement, the retreat provides an opportunity to review progress, strengthen institutional coordination and identify priority areas for enhanced cooperation.
