Really enjoyed doing @TheTrueNorthPod where we dig into the Clio journey, our AI transformation, the challenges of scaling in Canada, and what it takes to build a generational company.
Two best friends from Edmonton swore off VCs, found their first investor in a spam folder, and built a $5 billion company from Burnaby, BC.
My conversation with @jack_newton and Rian Gauvreau, the founders of @goclio is live:
0:00 Intro
3:53 Would you build it here?
16:57 Capital will find you
20:50 Two idiots from Edmonton
32:02 Why doesn't Claude eat your lunch?
43:58 Four steps to the epiphany
49:37 Sell work, not software
55:09 The shoe company
1:03:18 The spam folder
1:10:44 From "f*** VCs" to $2 billion

Litigants and lawyers already have AI. Courts deserve it too, built with judges and clerks, not just for them. I’m thrilled to build this at @goclio with Pablo Arredondo and @ShlomoKlapper and our ambitious team. Thank you for the vision @jack_newton.
This is exactly why Clio is investing in the judiciary with @BridgetMaryMc and Pablo Arredondo. Excited to see the impact we can have here.

Jordan Furlong writes “Growing numbers of AI-drafted or AI-assisted claims, lawsuits, applications, and other filings are now putting new pressures on government agencies, administrative tribunals, and courts around the world. These submissions, often prepared without professional legal assistance, can create three kinds of problems.
•The submissions are arriving in higher numbers than they did before, as people who would previously never think to make a legal claim now feel they can do so.
•The submissions are needlessly lengthy and bloated, often taking dozens of pages to state what could be said in dozens of paragraphs.
•The submissions often assert flawed claims, based on limited facts or incorrect evidence and citing inaccurate authorities or hallucinated laws.
…………
AI empowers justice seekers. But empowerment isn’t enough; people need guided expert assistance to make the best use of their power. Someday, maybe sooner than we think, that could become the primary public-facing role of the civil justice system.”

🤯 My jaw dropped when I saw this for the first time. I’m psyched to share @goclio’s Clio Work Visualizations today. Your practice just got gorgeous. 🥰
Your matter has a lot to say, and now it can show you. Visualizations are now in Clio Work.

Over the summer, @notsorrybryan I talked through some of the lesser known parts of building Clio. Things like:
- We originally thought @goclio would stay small. About a year in, we realized it could be much, much bigger
- We didn't immediately start with legal tech as a focus. My co-founder Rian was working in IT at Gowlings when he saw firsthand how bad legal software was at the time. We saw a huge opportunity to bring cloud to legal.
- @chrija emailed us twice before we saw it. Both messages landed in spam
- For years, we hauled a 100 pound trade show booth across the US and once nearly drove into a tornado
- @EJWalters and I had been talking about Clio + Fastcase for more than a decade
- Then I met with @lfaus in 2025. Weeks later, we announced the $1B vLex acquisition.
- Full circle moment: Gowlings was one of the advisors on that deal.
Bryan captured one of the fullest versions of the story I’ve read, but it still feels like the setup to what's next :)

Legal IT Insider (LITI) reports on a new hire by Clio: namely, former Michigan jurist (Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court), Bridget Mary McCormack, joins Clio as "general manager, judiciary." So good to see the judiciary getting some love from a big player in legal tech.
From LITI's post:
"In a rare move from the highest levels of the judiciary into legal technology, former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack has joined Clio as general manager, judiciary, strengthening the leadership team behind Clio’s expansion into the courts.
"In her new role, McCormack will lead Clio’s growth across courts, judicial officers, and dispute resolution organisational partners, leveraging her deep understanding of the justice system to help Clio grow its judiciary business. She will be working alongside Casetext co-founder Pablo Arredondo, who joined Clio last month from Thomson Reuters as senior vice president, judiciary."
