Three reasons why Lula’s 🇧🇷 victory matters positively for Europe:
🟢It will preserve the solid Mercosur - EU relationship
🟢It will help protect the Amazon rainforest
🟢It carries significant symbolic weight, as it checks the pro-Trump wave in Latin America

Illiberals, extremists, nationalists, autocrats (and wannabes): ask your friends #Vučić and Orbán how it ends when you stop listening to your citizens.
The last time we asked you who would be next, Vucic didn’t appreciate it… 🙂

Someone in the Dallas exurbs is going to have to tell his wife where the Christmas presents money went.
Let me get this straight.
The side that has been stuck in the Donbas for the last 5 years is now issuing ultimatums to the rest of Europe?
Seize Russian assets NOW.
🚨 Putin plans to use Ukraine peace talks to push NATO back to its 1997 military posture
According to The Telegraph, the Kremlin wants to force NATO to scale back its military presence in Europe to levels seen before Eastern European countries joined the Alliance.
This could mean demanding the withdrawal of NATO forces from Poland, the Baltic states, and Finland.
That is why Moscow is pushing for European countries to participate in negotiations over Ukraine. Diplomatic sources cited by The Telegraph say Putin wants to turn talks about ending the war into negotiations over the entire European security architecture.
The issue may also have been discussed during Putin's three-hour meeting with Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, in St. Petersburg.
However, European countries have previously rejected the Kremlin's demands to reduce NATO's military presence on its eastern flank.

Rough year for slopulism: Orban, Vucic, now Bolsonaro - soon to be followed by Netanyahu and the GOP
Regarding Brazil, European right-wingers should think in terms of Realpolitik, not rightoid internationale. Focus on our interests instead of ideological affinity. Brazil will remain a favela regardless who governs it
The only real question here is which candidate is better for Europe: and it’s Lula, by a small margin. He supports the Mercosur deal that gives us access to their market; he’s not an American puppet whom Trump could mobilize against us; and he will protect the Amazon rainforest, which is obviously beneficial to Europe and the world as a whole
Brazil (Presidential Election, second round), 99.7% counted:
Lula (PT, centre-left): 51.8% (+0.2)
F. Bolsonaro (PL, right): 48.2% (-0.2)
(+/- vs 90.7% counted)
#Brazil #Lula #Bolsonaro
Hmm. I swear I’ve seen this somewhere before…

Shocking text. “We think it’s safer to wait for the Russians (...) Stay safe". That was the French ambassador in Kyiv, writing to the European ambassadors’ Signal group on 24 February 2022, as explosions were already going off in the city. Lots of EU States participated in this most important diplomatic, military and analytical blunder of this age). For 3 months Dutch intelligence kept telling Prime Minister Rutte that an invasion was “unlikely". The agencies relied on a "trusted source" near the Kremlin who turned out to know nothing, because Putin shared the plan with maybe 10 people. USA put the Russian attack plan on the table. Western EU dismissed it. 12 hours before the tanks crossed the border, Russian forces had already changed how they communicated. But the official Dutch assessment still said war was merely “possible". The head of Germany’s BND was asleep in a Kyiv hotel when bombing started. Fled in a panic. Kept his job.

One of the best parts about Lula's victory in Brazil 🇧🇷 is watching in real time all those Polymarket/Kalshi bros eat shit and lose their money.

Marine Le Pen and her lieutenants think that it is all over. Her national conference in Orleans at the weekend was more like a coronation than the official launch of her campaign for the April-May presidential election. Judging by her dominant position in the polls, they may be right (as well as far right) but politics, and especially French politics, hates a certainty.

I suspect that, when the final decision was made, more Brazilians preferred Lula—who, for all his faults, still represents the old Brazil (coastal, Catholic, Portuguese, SoDem)—over another Bolsonaro, who embodies the newer Americanization trend in Latin America, complete with its neo-Pentecostal craziness.
In a sense, Lula stands for traditional Brazilian culture and mores, whereas Bolso reeks of foreign influence and distinctly un-Brazilian ideas.
