🇬🇷 🇮🇱 Greece is set to finalize a $3.42 billion deal to acquire advanced, multilayered Israeli air defense systems.
🇬🇷 🇮🇱 A Day After Eastern Libya Ratified Turkey's Maritime Pact, Hellas and Israel Sink a Frigate off Crete
The Hellenic Navy and Israel's Navy conducted a joint live-fire exercise in the northern Cretan Sea, testing Rafael's SPIKE NLOS and ER/ER2 missiles. Machitis-class and Mark V vessels fired on the retired frigate Bouboulina (F-463), which a Papanikolis-class submarine then sank with a heavy SUT torpedo.
Israeli fast-attack missile boats also fired.
The exercise took place a day after eastern Libya’s parliament ratified a 2019 maritime memorandum with Turkey, an agreement opposed by both Hellas and Israel.
It also reflects deepening defense ties between Athens and Jerusalem, highlighted by the recent multi-billion-euro "Achilles Shield" deal under which Israel will supply Hellas with a multi-layered air-defense architecture.
Both sides described the drill as a contribution to regional stability and freedom of navigation in the Eastern Mediterranean.
🇬🇷 🇪🇬 Greece and Egypt are reopening the EEZ file east of the 28th meridian.
Foreign ministers Gerapetritis and Abdelatty agreed to keep talking on waters left out of the 2020 delimitation, which only partially defined their maritime zones.
Any eastward extension toward Cyprus could mean a supplementary agreement. Working-level contacts come first, while Athens prepares parallel EU and UN moves after eastern Libya's parliament ratified the 2019 Turkish-Libyan memorandum.
Both ministers rejected that ratification, citing international law and UNCLOS. The 28th meridian is officially back on the table.

💥Canada’s PM @MarkJCarney just delivered the political joke of the day while standing next to Erdogan.🙂
From the joint 🇨🇦🇹🇷 communiqué:
“As NATO Allies, Canada and Türkiye are bound together by shared values: human rights, individual liberties, democracy, and the rule of law.”
Reality check:
• Türkiye ranks 163rd of 180 on the 2026 World Press Freedom Index. Journalists, opposition figures, and civil society activists face routine arrests and prosecutions.
• It holds far more political prisoners than Putin’s Russia by most credible estimates, with thousands jailed for alleged Gülen links, Kurdish politics, or simply criticizing the president.
• It routinely ignores European Court of Human Rights rulings (including the long-running cases of Osman Kavala and Selahattin Demirtaş).
• It has carried out broad crackdowns on independent media, civil society, and LGBTQ+ groups.
• Erdogan and his government have repeatedly and openly backed Hamas — a group Canada designates as a terrorist organization — while hosting its operatives.
• It maintains the occupation of northern Cyprus, conducts military operations and maintains occupation zones in Syria and northern Iraq, and rejects UNCLOS while aggressively asserting expansive maritime claims that threaten neighbors Greece and Cyprus .
He even claims Jerusalem as an inheritance from the Ottoman glorious days
Canada previously froze and cancelled military export permits over diversion risks and human-rights concerns. Now the joint statement treats these fundamental differences as a shared foundation of “values.”
This is the classic polite Canadian performance: list the values for the cameras, set the actual record aside for trade, defense deals, and diversification away from the United States.
It is the diplomatic equivalent of smiling for the photo while the facts in the room reek of hypocrisy — the same selective outrage Canada deploys against other governments when convenient.
Mark Carney is forging a new strategic partnership with Turkey, a sponsor and enabler of the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas, and he is so proud of it! 🙄
Carney's moral failure of justifying and endorsing terrorism is the least despicable! Canadians must be immensely elated of their PM.

Israel Foreign Ministry:
"Israel strongly condemns the decision of the Libyan House of Representatives to ratify the Maritime Jurisdiction Memorandum between Turkey and Libya.
This agreement infringes upon the sovereign rights of our close allies in the region.
Regretfully, once again we see Turkey working to destabilise the east Mediterranean region."
🇬🇷 Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis: Greece Will Not Be Influenced by an Invalid Action
Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis:
"Greece does not react impulsively. Greece acts according to a plan, in pursuit of its national interests. This is a fundamental difference compared with previous decades.
Everything achieved over the past seven years—our maritime delimitation agreements, the extension of territorial waters in the Ionian Sea, marine parks, maritime spatial planning, and the utilisation of our resources—has been based on a plan.
We will not be influenced by an action that is entirely invalid and produces no result."

💥The Libya setback for Greece shows that being a predictable, international-law-focused ally,no longer guarantees results in a transactional Mediterranean.🔥
In a Middle East where alliances are fluid, transactional, and increasingly untethered from old US-centric anchors, the eastern Mediterranean is becoming a test of who can operate in pure interest-driven CHAOS .
Eastern Libya’s ratification of the 2019 Turkey-Libya maritime MoU—long opposed by Greece—marks a clear setback for Athens. As Sean Mathews details in Middle East Eye, Greece’s partnerships with Egypt, the UAE, and Israel proved insufficient to block the move. Egypt and Turkey now converge on multiple fronts (Sudan, Somalia, opposition to Israeli expansion post-2023), the UAE is managing its differences with Ankara while backing Saddam Haftar’s ambitions, and Israel itself has engaged the Haftar camp (including a recent Netanyahu meeting with Saddam in UAE ).
A Turkish role in the east, by some Israeli calculations, may even tighten Greece’s dependence on Jerusalem.
Vassilis Nedos’s reporting aligns: Turkey and the UAE are jointly facilitating efforts to unify Libyan armed forces, while Israel has also sought a foothold in Benghazi. Libya politics remains moving sand.
This is not merely a bilateral Greece-Turkey or Greece-Libya problem. It reflects a broader reordering as the United States is in transition—less willing or able to underwrite regional security architectures. In that vacuum, states prioritize immediate gains (energy claims, political succession in Libya, countering rivals elsewhere) over consistent alignment with Greek or Cypriot maritime interests.
Greece and Cyprus cannot rely on the assumption that shared partners will automatically defend their positions. They must become sharper, more self-reliant actors: consolidate legal and operational control over their own maritime zones (including around Crete), deepen concrete economic and security stakes with WHOEVER delivers results, and treat the region as a competitive environment rather than a fixed alliance map.
🔥Real influence will come from demonstrated capacity to exercise power and selective, reciprocal partnerships—not from counting on yesterday’s alignments.
In a dangerous, multipolar Mediterranean, alertness and strategic autonomy are no longer optional.

This is pretty much true from what I’m told. But don’t leave out the Israel component. Israel wants saddam in power too and a Turkish role there would, by Israeli calculations, make Greece even more dependent on Israel. Bibi met Saddam last month

Eastern Libya's ratification of the Turkey-Libya memorandum is a legal fiction: a line between two states that do not face each other, drawn through Crete’s waters as if the island did not exist.
Turkey, which stands outside UNCLOS, cannot bind Greece, Egypt or Cyprus with it, yet will use it as cover for survey ships and a naval foothold south of Crete.
Hellas must make this costly. Strengthen the counter-bloc with Israel, Egypt and Cyprus on energy, security, joint exercises and subsea cables. Lobby Washington, Congress first, to tie East Med defense to UNCLOS. Brief think tanks with a map: Crete erased. Take it to the UN and the EU. Back it all with licensing south of Crete.

🇬🇷 🇪🇺 President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen:
We deeply regret the ratification today by the Libyan Parliament of the so-called Libyan-Turkey Memorandum of Understanding on the delimitation of maritime jurisdictions in the Mediterranean Sea.
We recall that the EU's position on this matter was clearly stated by the European Council in 2019 and remains unchanged.
This agreement infringes upon the sovereign rights of third states, it does not comply with the Law of the Sea, and is null and void.
We reaffirm our solidarity with Greece and Cyprus.
We reiterate the EU's well known position against any outside interference in Libya.
What are your thoughts on the Foreign Ministry's statement declaring the Turkey–Libya Memorandum of Understanding "illegal, invalid, and null and void"?
🇬🇷 Hellenic Foreign Ministry: Turkish–Libyan Memorandum Is Illegal, Invalid and Null and Void
Greece's Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the Libyan House of Representatives' decision to approve the 2019 Turkish–Libyan maritime delimitation memorandum.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"Turkey and Libya do not have opposite or adjacent coastlines that could provide a legal basis for the delimitation of maritime zones.
The memorandum disregards the maritime rights of Greek islands and violates international maritime law.
We call on the Libyan side to refrain from actions that violate international law and undermine stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Greece has informed its partners and allies and will take all necessary measures to safeguard its sovereign rights."
🇨🇾 🇮🇱 Republic of Cyprus MP Chirisis Pantelides Defends Israel Ties, Accuses Critics of Antisemitism
Chirisis Pantelides, a Nicosia MP and member of the Executive Committee of Cyprus' Democratic Party (DIKO), defended cooperation with the pro-Israel Israel Allies Foundation, saying stronger Cyprus–Israel relations serve the Republic of Cyprus' national interests.
Speaking to Radio Proto, he accused critics of cooperation with Israel of antisemitism and anti-Western sentiment, highlighting bilateral defence and security ties.
Pantelides said Cyprus should seek closer cooperation with Israel in the event of a threat from Turkey.
He also criticised Averof Neofytou over his proposal to lift sanctions against Russia.
