Donor lungs from older people carried more CD38, an enzyme that drains the NAD+ their cells need when blood rushes back after transplant, @OhioState researchers report in a preprint. Deleting or blocking it kept young mice's lungs softer and airier.
Nephrologists in Chongqing put platelets from chronic kidney disease patients into a culture of a healthy donor's killer T cells, and within five days those T cells were senescent on every marker, with their mitochondria failing first. Infection kills many of these patients.
United Therapeutics opened a third barn of gene-edited donor pigs in Houston, planned at about 125 organs a year each, roughly one percent of US kidney transplants for all three. How long a pig kidney lasts is what its six-patient trial now has to show.
A startup, @RadicalNumerics, says an AI-designed phage cocktail went into a patient whose E. coli had beaten every antibiotic and every stock phage, then withheld the outcome. All its published numbers come from test tubes, and resistant infection is what kills frail people.
Mouse cells whose lysosomes had been shut off filled with protein clumps, then displayed a membrane-stuck form of CSF1 that drew macrophages in to bite the clumps out, a @Yale group reports in a preprint. Those clumps are what builds up in aging brains and hearts.
Wrong chromosome counts cause about a third of miscarriages and rise with a mother's age. A team led from @Yale found part of the cause in mouse eggs: the platform that grips each chromosome wears thin, and topping up one of its proteins cut misalignment from 39% to 13%.
Naked mole-rats live past thirty, and a gene called cGAS looked like the reason. Teams at @Cambridge_Uni and @UofT sequenced a close relative that lives about six years and found it carries the same four changes, so they cannot explain the long life alone.
Trials of drugs meant to slow aging want to measure how well a body still works rather than wait twenty years for diseases. John Beard, who led the WHO work that defined that measure, tells @LongevityTech it still has no agreed way to score it.
A model from @OpenAI proved that the zeros of the Riemann zeta function sit in a narrower band than mathematicians have known since 1859. A computer checked a coded version of the claim, but people are still checking that the code says what they mean.
A popular blood formula, PhenoAge, often reads cancer patients as biologically older. Testing it in 3,000 surgical patients, a team at @MSKCancerCenter found it rose with tumor stage and did no better than a plain sum of its tests, so it may be reading the cancer, not aging.
