Last week we hosted an experts’ workshop, “Women, Peace and Security in India: An Inclusive Agenda”, supported by @GermanyinIndia.
We started the conversation by identifying the many women of WPS in India: women who live with various insecurities, serve in uniform, practice law, report from conflict zones, and shape policy.
The workshop asked four questions: Who are the “women” of WPS? What kinds of insecurity can WPS in India address? What does “peace” mean, and to whom? And what would an inclusive WPS framework for India look like?
Thanks to everyone who joined the conversation, including @HappymonJacob @Tishya_Khillare @swarraj @rivagdas @LtGenHooda @dhanasreej @shaillykedia @Letstransform @swarraj @mihira_sood @RinaKashyap2023 @NatRaghuvanshi @DebotriDhar @Sruthim61 @WISCOMP_India

#WhatTankThinks | In an increasingly volatile geopolitical scenario and changing world order, India’s strategic choices have allowed it to pursue strategic autonomy while maintaining simultaneous engagement with competing powers.
Dr Raghvendra Kumar (@RaghvendraKr_DU) argues that India's strategic framework works on the philosophy of Madhyamā Mārga (Middle Path).
In his paper published by the Foreign Policy Research Institute (@FPRI), he suggests that within this framework, Africa emerges as a critical pillar for India.

What do you do if you find two consenting individuals engaging in intimate relations inside a place of worship?
You ask them to leave, you fine them, you ask them not to return, and so on.
Killing them is Barbaric.
So is justifying the killing.

🚨PUBLICATION ALERT🚨
Delighted to release our third report in a series of five from our joint project with @DefenceUwa on 'Enhancing Australia-India Underwater Domain Awareness (UDA) Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific'.
🔗tinyurl.com/y86rbbwd
🔺This report examines the development of uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) in 🇦🇺 & 🇮🇳 & the case for bilateral cooperation in the undersea domain.
🔺The authors, RAdm Puneet Chadha (Retd) & @FathomsOne argue that the two national ecosystems are complementary rather than competitive, & that a phased, capability-driven partnership that begins with benign & civil applications is more likely to endure than early collaboration in sensitive undersea warfare technologies.
🔺The authors propose a framework built on four concurrent pillars: operational cooperation, technological collaboration, industrial partnership, & institutional coordination. They sequence them across near-term, medium-term, & long-term horizons & set out eleven policy recommendations to advance them.

Semantics aside, I think India is a middle power for 4 reasons:
1. Weight: Sitting at #6 in nominal GDP—comfortably in the middle tier of global power.
2. Blocs: Balancing between US–China and US–Russia.
3. Bridge: Straddling the rich North and poor South.
4. Capability: Neither too weak to depend entirely on others, nor powerful enough to do without them.

"Weeks after a heart-wrenching tragedy destroyed thousands of families and homes, if you were left searching for your loved ones with no clear answers forthcoming, would you fear the worst—or still cling to a straw of hope?"
@Smita_Sharma asks in her article for the latest issue of India's World.
In 'Carnage in the Mountains: The Long Road Ahead for Rebuilding Nepal', she shares her experience of covering the devastating flash floods in Nepal on 26 August.
She recounts, "On the morning of 27 August, as my cameraperson and I drove down from Kathmandu to Nuwakot, some 60 kilometres away, through the worst affected areas, a pall of gloom hung in the air."
Talking about the road ahead for the "fragile Himalayan nation,"' she says that Nepal's tragedy raises questions that are social, political economic, diplomatic and, most importantly, environmental.

Ever wondered how South Korea turned its cultural popularity into a global fashion phenomenon?
"Korean style, both what Koreans put on their faces and what they put on for fashion, has become a real-world trend. But it did not happen overnight, and it started not with fashion. The history of how Korean fashion became global is the story of a slow build, one step at a time," writes Greg Dong Suk Yoo in article 'The Tale of How Korean Fashion Became Global.'

THE EDITORIAL MASTERSTROKE — Happymon Jacob @HappymonJacob
A foreign-policy magazine devoting its cover to tea?
Brilliantly counterintuitive.
Jacob's editorial traces an extraordinary journey: Britain's dependence on Chinese tea, colonial opium commerce, Assam's indigenous tea, plantation labour, mass marketing and India's eventual embrace of chai.
The everyday cup becomes a window into globalisation itself.
The question practically asks itself: How much history do we unknowingly consume every morning?

🧵 WHAT IF A CUP OF INDIAN TEA COULD EXPLAIN THE FUTURE OF INDIA—AND THE WORLD? 🇮🇳🌍
Think again.
Behind that everyday cup lies an extraordinary intersection of empire, diplomacy, climate, commerce, livelihoods, geography and global power.
Who grows it?
Who profits?
Who controls markets?
Who protects its origins?
And who will determine its future?
Now connect that cup to BRICS, China, Nepal, Hormuz, global finance and India's strategic choices.
Suddenly, international affairs stop looking distant.
They become astonishingly personal.
That's the intellectual invitation of India's World @IndiasWorld_mag , October 2026.
And what a remarkable editorial proposition: The Great Indian Tea Story—not merely as an agricultural narrative, but as a gateway to understanding India's place in an increasingly interconnected, competitive and uncertain world.
To editor Happymon Jacob @HappymonJacob and the distinguished contributors: your October issue brings together questions that deserve attention far beyond diplomatic circles.
Here is why this edition merits a serious reading—article by article.
