My sense is that Quebec voters really wanted to avoid this sort of performance for the sake of provoking tensions with Ottawa, and no benefit for Quebecers.
Le choix du Québec de ne pas être à la rencontre d'Ottawa aujourd'hui est un choix assumé et réfléchi. Notre position est simple : le gouvernement du Québec rencontre les nations autochtones directement, de nation à nation, sur notre territoire. (1)

Canadian heavy crude is fetching near-record premiums across the Pacific, bolstering the case for the country’s plan to build a new pipeline to its west coast. A barrel of Canadian Cold Lake crude delivered to South Korea traded at a record $9.50 a barrel more than the Dubai crude benchmark in September. It’s a stark contrast to the weakening price Canadian oil is getting in the US, its biggest market. Oil sands benchmark Western Canadian Select’s discount, called a differential, to a monthly average of West Texas Intermediate futures widened to as much as $28.25 a barrel in Alberta last week, the biggest in almost four years. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

I can’t believe this needs saying but let me say it: when Trump claims Canada will “give us anything at this moment” 1) he’s not serious 2) he can’t be trusted 3) no deal is better because of 1 and 2 #cdnpoli

For all the heads of business groups who keep saying to get “back to the table” - you know the rest of us can hear him right?
TRUMP on Canada/Trade War: Canada has been ripping off the US for years. I had to do it. We'll have that settled pretty soon. They're willing to give us anything at this moment.

NEW from me: Last year, Mark Carney set a goal to double Canada's non-US exports by 2035. Today, he's already halfway there In response to Trump's tariffs & threats, Canadian businesses, consumers, & even tourists are taking difficult steps to decouple from the US🧵

The tenor of this piece may be judged by the fact that it refers to the Alberta referendum as if it were likely to pass; that it refers to Marine Le Pen's National Rally as "far right," ie in ironic quotation marks; and that it refers unironically to Canadian opposition to Trump as a "hissy fit." Freeland: The President is destroying the US market. In fact, your stock market is performing worse than the stock markets in Europe or Canada. And all of this for what reason? Because Canadians aren't being nice enough. The end result was doing something that's hard to do... making Canadians angry.
