Last week the UN passed a resolution recognizing the trans-Atlantic slave trade as the “gravest crime against humanity.” Not slavery in general, but the specific slave trade perpetrated by Americans and Europeans. As I show in a new article, while slavery was a universal and ubiquitous institution, the Christian world was actually the first to oppose it principally and to act against it.
