Ever wonder if tRNAs can regulate the identity of a cancer cell?
@HsiehLab @FredHutch postdoc @yeonsookim_phd did and discovered a single tRNA that can control lineage dependency and drug sensitivity in prostate cancer published today @Nature: nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

Scientists in the @HsiehLab at Fred Hutch Cancer Center found that the molecular regulator RNA—specifically tRNA, a type of RNA—may be able to influence the nature of prostate cancer cells and how they respond to treatment. Via @Newsweek bit.ly/3UjeKz9

What is fascinating about academia as a career is that there are certain ideas that you have been working on since you remember. The numerical optimalities of the genetic code is what drew me to biology in the first place. I ended up working on codon usage as grad student and tRNAs as a postdoc, as the language layer on top of the genetic code. And now, 25 years later, I’m still amazed by how under-explored this field remains.
So, new preprint with Vijay Ramani 🧵
Hundreds of human tRNA genes form a redundant repertoire for decoding the genetic code. But does redundancy imply functional equivalence?

Thanks @RuggeroDavide!
Exciting new study from Andrew Hsieh @HsiehLab and team, revealing how a single tRNA can influence cancer cell identity, lineage plasticity, and therapeutic resistance. Another fascinating example of how the translation control specificity plays a much broader role in cancer!

Tao Pan @UofC played a very important role in this project showing us the conceptual and potential mechanistic beauty of studying tRNA. I’m grateful that @arvind_rasi introduced us many years ago @ @GordonConf. Thank you @SusanLAckerman1 @UCSD for providing the n-Trtct2 mice.

I’m pleased to share our new co-authored paper, now published in Cell Commun Signaling.
We found that extracellular vesicles released by sympathetic neuron-like cells promote metastatic traits in breast cancer cells by inducing a hybrid EMT-like state.
