I heard there was once this carpenter who said we should love our neighbours, the stranger, and even our enemies. You know, I think maybe he was on to something.

People will laugh at this lady, but the fact is, she doesn't know about Trump's self-enrichment, because the news and information sources she consumes haven't told her about it. Mis- and dis-information is at a crisis level in our country.
Trump supporter: “We love Trump! He loves our country. I know, he proves, he tells, he, he does without, he, he served our country without being paid”
Davram Stiefler: “He made about $2.4B in the second term. When you’re talking about a $400K salary, it’s like a grain of sand on a beach of money”
TS: “I don’t know about that”

I'm still pushing for a Nobel Prize for the Voyager team. Outlasted its mission by 45 years and counting. Incredible.

Could I stay longer?
One year. No internet. Unlimited books 📚
A tiny whitewashed cottage with a pale blue door, a crooked chimney and a stone step to sit on with a cuppa.
No notifications, no scrolling, just a shelf of well thumbed paperbacks, a window seat and a year of rainy afternoons to get through.
Would you stay here?
Yes or No?

Samhain begins on the evening of the 31st October and goes through to November 1st. Today a small gathering on Glastonbury Tor honored our ancestors and welcomed the Winter. #Samhain
This is genuinely a conversation I have never heard before...
In this abbey in France, nuns have been restoring old books for over 70 years.
The Benedictine sisters of Maumont Abbey run a full workshop and their craft is bookbinding, gilding and restoration. Centuries-old books arrive damaged, torn and crumbling, and they restore them all by hand to last another hundred years.

No plans on Healthcare, affordability, job growth, wage growth, nada. Just boogeyman politics based on xenophobia and racism.

Proposed new rule:
You should be able to define the thing you are against.
I think that would be helpful.
Davram Stiefler: “What do you think about socialism?”
Trump supporter: “I think it’s something that is run a country like, like you go to Iran or somethin like that. That’s, that’s socialism, you know?”
DS: “Socialism is Iran? What is socialism, what does it mean?”
TS: “To me? To me I would think socialism is… like a dem- dema- what you call it? Uh… demo- dictator country, you know? Somewhere like that”
DS: “As an economic system, what is socialism?”
TS: “An econocic, an eco- econopic system is a place that offers opportunity and work”
DS: “But what is socialism?”
TS: “As it defines? I don’t really have a definition, definition of it, you know?”

Halloween: a day when we get it right
Strangers come to us
beautiful, ugly, odd or scary
and we accept them all without question.
Compliment them, treat them kindly
and give them good things.
Why don’t we live like that?

I think the appeal with TNG was that it was like a simulation of a world where, if you made compelling arguments, people were swayed and it changed the course of the episode.
The characters are all competent and fair-minded, and their universe is one that rewards this.

This shit irritates me. They don’t have policies, they just have fake culture wars. Immigrants, Muslims, Trans, Gays, and Socialism are buzz words now. They just throw them around to fear monger Americans into believing we are about to be taken over by social extremist

Sunset.
The Wheel of the Year turns again.
It is the end of the Harvest season, and the beginning of Winter.
Blessed #Samhain to all who celebrate.

I was in late teens / early 20s when Star Trek TNG first aired. The character of Jean-Luc Picard was a hugely formative one for me. So different than other genre TV "heros" of the time. We were shown diplomacy, integrity, leadership, intellect, vulnerability. #RIPPatrickStewart
Star Trek TNG had a profound impact on me growing up, and Patrick Stewart’s role above all: the secular, rationalist, egalitarian, post-scarcity (whisper it: socialist) vision of the future, a completion of the Radical Enlightenment project married to a sort of Aristotelian sense of virtue, duty, and deep purpose, a Shakespearean, theatrical-literary, humanist forgiveness and celebration of our foibles and fallenness, and Age of Discovery romantic call to adventure and exploration. I remain a believer that this world can yet be built.
Seeing now that many people are sharing their thoughts about the impact of the character and his performance. Thank you @DanielMiessler. #RIPPatrickStewart

I’m sad about Patrick Stewart dying.
To me he was Picard, and he taught me a great deal about how to be a man.
None of this clicked for me until I was in my 30s and 40s, but he basically gave me the model of a multi-dimensional leader.
I absolutely loved how he was simultaneously so strong and so intellectual. So forceful and so empathic.
The model of the Ready Room is pretty much still my ideal leadership style.
Shit goes down and he calls everyone in and gets their opinions first. People vary widely. There is discussion. He might ask some questions. And then he decides. And that’s it.
And there was so much vulnerability. And so many layers. And weaknesses. And they all just made his strength and overall character so much more solid and whole.
I’ve never been interested in celebrities. Or meeting them. But I’ve fantasized multiple times about meeting him in like an airport or something and like having a friend mentor conversation with Patrick Picard. But I never went to see him anywhere because like, what do you even say? You have 30 seconds and it’s already been said by thousands of others, because we all feel this way about him. Still I’d have loved to have that pretend airport conversation.
Anyway. It’s all silly. It was a show. And Picard was a character. And writers wrote the lines.
But it’s weird that at a moment where so many weird things are now possible, the force of how real a teacher Picard was to me is just as strong as ever.
Like I know for certain that I’d be less wise as a person if not for Captain Picard.
I’m thankful for that. And I hope he’s resting well.
🫡🥺😢
