It's amazing how so much of this play is still relevant. The idea of honor, dignity, culture and tradition being sold for profit by schemers in grey suits. Men who would squander the family's priceless heirlooms to satisfy their base desires. Many of our politicians would rather sell this country's dignity for profit, folks. They would sell Don Lorenzo's house for self-serving interests as the Virgin Queen of these Islands watches in horror. You've seen such things just this week. They sell out our country to cheap warlords. So much has been lost. So much has changed - for the worse. The nobility and virtues of Old Manila are long past us, mga kababayan. 🎢
If anyone wants to know my views on Philippine politics and culture, read Nick Joaquin's "A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino" and its adaptation on stage and on film, "Ang Larawan." It's one of the most moving works of art I've ever encountered. I recall reading it out of curiosity when I was in high-school abroad, a way to connect with my Filipino identity, and it totally captivated me, Its haunting story still sticks with me to this day and I often find myself rereading or rewatching it. The play touches on so many themes; loss, regret, change, idealism. It always gets me emotional reflecting on it, especially seen recent events in our country's history. So much has been lost. For me, nothing encapsulates what it means to be "Filipino" more than the fate of Candida and Paula, the tragedy that befell their family and the loss of the dignity of their old city. My entire view of this country was shaped by it, my politics' guided by a desire to return of what was taken from the sisters by uncaring fate and wicked men. I hope everyone can give it a read or at least watch since the full movie is on YouTube at the moment, with English subtitles. I hope it touches you the way it continues to touch me. youtube.com/watch?v=9SW6pMJ6…

rant: America has the most insufferable race and ethnic relations of any country I've lived or been to. In Japan you'll be barred from certain establishments as a foreigner and angry drunk teens will call your "fakinu Gaijin." In Russia they will call you chololadka/Ethiopian/negr if black, pindos if American. In Brazil, you'll be referred as a gringo-colonialist. In Israel, girls will ask if "you Jew?" and run a background check if you're not β€” but in each of these places, people's initial cold feelings or racially sensitive jokes will be replaced by a genuine warmth once they like you as a person (the race jokes never fully go away though). Only in America do people who've been friends for years walk on eggshells when mentioning each other's race, and is there a naughty word you can't say because it has evil mystical power. Now you have identities centered on nervous quirk social media trends: "I'm a Kimchi-Pizza Wasian, tehehe." No lady, you aren't a set of condiments and snacks, you're part Korean and part Italian. Worst of all, this hypersensitivity rests strongest in people furthest removed from the race/ethnicity they call their own. You can tell a FOB Ghanaian (who'll call you Obroni) he looks like one of those Doctors turned Generals who runs a small unrecognized republic in the Congo and he'll laugh but some guy born in Oakland will call you insensitive. It applies to every race and ethnicity. I do wonder if the chief cause of this (aside from low confidence in your own roots) is the fact so much of this race discourse is heavily monetized β€” a few people make cash by tearing apart any unity the country has left, making every conversation incredibly annoying. β€” end rant β€”

I believe one of the key reasons Republicans lost is that they were completely defeated in the information war. There are literally millions of normies - possibly tens of millions - who genuinely believe that Donald Trump personally ate babies with Epstein. They believe AI data centers consume all water on the planet and that there is a wave of hidden lynchings of black people in the South and that Lindsay Clancy is innocent while the Cornell 7 represent a campaign of white men terrorising and raping everybody. So the question becomes - how do you stop leftists flooding the short form video space with insanely toxic lies. People really believe that Lindsay Clancy is innocent, they really believe that there are secret lynchings going on throughout the South, they really believe that data centers are destroying the planet

Nice story but untrue. The British Army stayed in Singapore at the Singapore Government’s request well past independence into the 70s giving Singapore time to build its own capacity. Israel also helped
β€œLee Kuan Yew took over Singapore when he was very young and he needed an army as he was surrounded by a bunch of muslims who hated him.” β€œHe asked all the other nations for help because the British just left them with their problems.” β€œEvery nation refused to help him except Israel. Now he said: How am I gonna take military aid surrounded by muslims from Israel.” β€œHe finally accepted the aid and told everybody they were Mexicans.β€πŸ˜‚ - Charlie Munger. 2022. Redlands
