New Podcast: Anticholinergic Side Effects in Psych Meds @JCPjournal
Come learn:
1. Why anticholinergic burden matters
2. Our equivalency scale vs. others
3. Sedation ≠ anticholinergic
4. Antihistamine ≠ anticholinergic
5. Surprising findings + practical tips
Thank you JCP for asking us to put this together. Link below.
Don’t forget anticholinergics side effects!
Unlike opioids or benzodiazepines, anticholinergics side effects—confusion, sedation, even possible dementia risk—often fly under the radar.
There had already been attempts at making anticholinergic risk tables; our new paper improves on those by quantifying the problem. Using binding affinity data we created an anticholinergic equivalency table. Such a table permits the calculation total anticholinergic burden and better help patients.
I hope people will find it useful. Link below

Agitated depression can be argued to be a mixed mood state. However, the current DSM-5-TR fails to capture it due to the exclusion of overlapping mood criteria, such as mood lability, irritability, and agitation.
Antidepressants can often exacerbate this variant of mood state
