After two weird days as one of the few journalists inside the Four Seasons in Bahrain, I was left speechless by the Davos-esque Conflab on Palestinian Prosperousness, or “economic workshop,” hosted by Jared Kushner & co. Where do I begin? A thread.

The trip highlights the remarkable relationship between a son of the US president and a tycoon with a criminal record who has close ties to Vladimir Putin’s personal security service. Intelligence experts say such connections are ripe for manipulation. ft.trib.al/p0LBRYI

Reading the Western reporting from the campaign trail in Israel, you can see the return of a fantasy: that our wayward ally might become a normal country overnight by ejecting the one man who caused all the trouble. For @equatormag, I asked @NathanThrall how to read the result:

In the end, Brazil really did teach the United States a lesson. They jailed the fascist, and then they defeated his political heir.

FT’s report on Lula’s comeback says Flávio Bolsonaro’s “nine fingers” jab in the final debate, mocking the finger Lula lost in a factory accident at 17 while working nights, became a turning point. The attack let Lula draw a sharp contrast between his own working-class history and Bolsonaro’s background, helping shift momentum in the runoff.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva came from behind to win Brazil’s runoff election, halting a right-wing wave sweeping Latin America and defying predictions that the 80-year-old political veteran had finally reached the end of his extraordinary career. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

A reminder that Jair Bolsonaro is serving a 27 year prison sentence for plotting a coup and planning to assassinate Lula
What a mess. Polling has supposedly closed in Brazil - and no word from Brazil's electoral authorities about whether voting hours will be extended because of apparent sabotage of public transport in at least 10 states

Dom Phillips on “fascist” Bolsonaro and his “more extreme” sons. I look back at WhatsApp messages of murdered British journalist from last time a member of Bolsonaro family led in Brazil’s presidential election. Prescient then, pertinent today. theguardian.com/world/2026/o…

So let met get that straight: paying a wealth tax is impossible (“billionaires have no liquidity”, “it would be taxing unrealized gains”, “their wealth is virtual”) but paying half a billion to influence elections is possible. Did I understand well?
Elon Musk has cemented his record as the largest individual political donor in modern American history. Musk poured $446 million of his own money into this year’s midterm elections, mostly aimed at preserving the Republican Party’s control of Congress. wapo.st/4igb5Kq

France is trying to come to terms with a disturbing new development tonight -  a terrorist attack on black people and muslims in a town just south west of Paris. President Emmanuel Macron travelled to Trappes soon after the attack which killed one person and wounded four others, including a 12 years old girl. Macron said: ‘This is a turning point - the first time in our Republic that people have been targeted in a terrorist attack for the colour of their skin.’ 1/ lemonde.fr/societe/live/2026…

A massive astroturfing campaign is underway.
Lana Nusseibeh has always understood that the #UN works when someone is willing to systematically build the bridges nobody else wants to build. In the Security Council she did that quietly and consistently and with great profesionalism. She now has the chance to take that same spirit and ethos to the UN Secretariat. Wishing you courage and strength for the journey ahead and much success!

In four days, it will be a year since the siege of Sudan's El Fashir ended in a bloodbath. This is the story of a group of young doctors, nurses and volunteers who stayed at the last functioning hospital until the very end. With @hafiz54472061 economist.com/interactive/18…

The GRU hacked into Jared Kushner's iPhone. Dutch military intelligence (MIVD) then recruited a GRU spy who gave them access to the hacked phone. What MIVD discovered was that Kushner had access to two bank accounts --one Azerbaijani, the other Israeli --where Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Emirati ruler Mohammed bin Zayed deposited money. It sounds like a slightly far-fetched episode of "Slow Horses," but it's real. And it proves just how eye-poppingly corrupt this administration was and continues to be as its "special envoy" decides the fate of tens of millions in Europe in the Middle East. Simply incredible reporting by Matthew Cole, drawn from his new book on Kushner. vanityfair.com/story/jared-k…

In some ways, @Lana_Nusseibeh is a compelling candidate for UN Secretary-General. She's a woman from a moderate Gulf country and has a record of effective diplomacy -- but unfortunately she has proven her effectiveness by backing the UAE's role in arming the RSF militia as it has engaged in mass murder and mass rape in Sudan, in a rampage that both the Biden and Trump administrations have called genocide. So, sure, an effective diplomat is wonderful -- but not if the effectiveness is divorced from values the UN is meant to promote. No doubt she thought she was simply supporting the policies her country's leaders set. But hundreds of thousands have died in Sudan, as best we can tell, and she has helped lead a UAE diplomatic effort that has lied about it, covered it up and persisted in it even as the slaughter continues. Shouldn't that be disqualifying?
I am standing to be Secretary-General because I believe this is a moment to act with greater urgency: to act earlier, bring people together across difference, and drive the work forward until it produces concrete results. That is how we rebuild trust in the United Nations and ensure it delivers meaningful change for the people it exists to serve. My vision: lananusseibeh.org

“In late spring 2020, a source I knew to be reliable called me with a story,” writes Matthew Cole. “The Dutch government had hacked into Jared Kushner’s phone and monitored him as he accessed a Dubai-based bank account. What was odd, the source said, was that the money in the account—hundreds of millions of dollars—had come from a bank in Azerbaijan. Most importantly, Kushner appeared to have transferred significant amounts of money from the Dubai account to other individuals, including a warlord, a mercenary and a one-time hit man. The story sounded preposterous, I told my source. And yet. Six months later, I found myself speaking with someone else about the UAE government and their use of mercenaries in conflicts around the Middle East and Africa when I asked, on a whim, whether they knew anything about Kushner and bank transfers from a UAE account. My acquaintance grew quiet. Then they replied, ‘Yes.’” Kushner’s lawyer denied the bank account existed.
