Leonardo da Vinci created the first ever "satellite view" map in 1502 of Imola, Italy. He did this by manually measuring the angles and distance of every corner on every building in the city.

Something I'll add is that in my experience, academic conservatives tend to have instincts highly supportive of the idea of ultra-centralized prestige economies. They assume the problem is that the wrong ideas have hijacked the control points, and getting things "back to how they should be" would be a simple matter of enshrining "objectivity and standards" in the mission statement of the high-prestige journals. IMO, this is naive and actually pretty "unconservative" in its assumption that centralized command/control is the best way.

Recreation of an armored Comanche horse from 1700. Raw hide scales with sand glue on provided protection against arrows and melee weapons. It eventually fell out of favor when guns became widely available.

This type of book was popular in the 2000s, and I'll admit I was impressed by this one. This sort of EU-boosterism has been looking increasingly implausible for a long time and now, not a quarter century later, looks ludicrous.

Do people not understand what The Protestant Reformation was? Did we remove it and all the analysis from all schooling in the past 20 years??
why do early modern witch-hunts do a pretty good job of predicting early industrialization and present-day high GDP

My leftist mutuals who think that the French rioters are on their side really have to reconsider their LARP. Do you think these people feel any solidarity with you or "the proletariat"? Even the Yellow Vests were more Marxist.

Obviously I know the reason, but it's an omission that the Omani empire isn't discussed together with the European colonial empires of the same period. First fighting, and then defeating, the Portuguese in the Middle East and East Africa in the 17th century, then establishing a colonial economy in East Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. Ruling places like Mombasa and Zanzibar, with the latter hosting a slave plantation economy (producing cloves), and being the entrepot for a vast trade in slaves and ivory from the East African interior.

Hydra, Greece banned cars in 1955. 70 years later, the island still runs on footpaths, boats and donkeys. No traffic, horns, or parking lots. One of the Mediterranean’s boldest decisions somehow feels even more modern today.

Because the last pandemic was so poorly handled, if this spirals out of control nobody will believe it. The public does not trust our institutions, and for good reason. There is a way to regain trust and accountability, but few want to pay the price to do so.
Russia's plague outbreak is getting worse, now with 5 hospitals in Irkutsk quarantined, universities canceling classes and accusations from healthcare workers that the government is attempting a media cover-up. Nearly 200 contacts of a 28-year-old anti-plague laboratory worker who died last week are reportedly under isolation or medical observation. Irkutsk universities are canceling classes citing a “case of pneumonic plague,” while an aluminum plant introduced mandatory masks. A local government warning advising residents not to travel to Shelekhov was published and later deleted. Healthcare workers claim doctors are discussing plague internally while avoiding the diagnosis in official documents. Russian health authorities continue to deny any plague outbreak, attributing the woman's death to “pneumonia of unknown origin.” Pneumonic plague is far worse that it's Bubonic cousin as its transmitted directly between humans.
