The widening gulf between official propaganda and the lived reality of millions of Ethiopians is increasingly difficult to conceal. The latest @UNDP #Multidimensional Poverty Index presents another devastating indictment of Ethiopia's development failures. As reported by The Reporter, an estimated 90.77 million Ethiopians experience multidimensional poverty, compared with 88.46 million in the previous assessment. Although this increase largely reflects population growth rather than a newly measured rise in the poverty rate, the persistence of such staggering deprivation exposes the hollowness of official prosperity rhetoric. Under Abiy Ahmed and his Prosperity Party, Ethiopia has become trapped in a mutually reinforcing polycrisis of armed conflict, poverty, economic hardship, displacement, ethnic polarization, and institutional breakdown. The regime's authoritarian governance, destructive political choices, and failure to uphold justice and the rule of law have become major obstacles to peace, sustainable development, and national stability. The latest bloodshed and destruction in Moyale, where #Oromo–Somali tensions have erupted into deadly violence and displacement, are another tragic warning. Ethnic entitlement, inflammatory political rhetoric, unresolved territorial disputes, and failures of accountable governance must be confronted—not exploited for political advantage. The federal and regional authorities must be held accountable for protecting civilians and preventing further atrocities. Prosperity cannot be proclaimed through slogans, glittery projects, or political spectacle while millions endure poverty, insecurity, and injustice. Genuine prosperity must be measured by human dignity, peace, freedom, justice, accountable institutions, and tangible improvements in people's lives. Ethiopia urgently needs a fundamental change in governance and a credible pathway toward a just, peaceful, sustainable, democratic, and resilient future.
