First read for a new book club. A Botanical Daugther is quickly becoming one of my favourite things I’ve read this year. Only half way through but if anything happens to Jennifer I’ll riot!

Amazing read. Once I got my head around the timey-wimey stuff I breezed through the final third. A great take on censorship, knowledge and beliefs grounded in tradition, with some quotes and lines that will stay with me for a long time.

Took longer than I’d like but this was a ride. Fascinating world building and while it was a slog to get to end, the pieces all fall in place for a great last stand. The character interactions were a little lacking but this is a setting I’ll not forget. Lovecraft meets Avatar.

I’m sorry but I have no interest in reading a book that even YOU, the AUTHOR, couldn’t be bothered to read or write.

This is just so depressing to see. Readers deserve better than this.

England with a very Hypno-Disc display. Unbelievable potential but let themselves down when it mattered most.

The UK public celebrates a genuine national treasure on his centenary, which coincides with a landslide of council votes for a political party that rejects net zero, wants to defund the institutions that Attenborough's life has enriched, and doesn't care about nature. Go figure.

South Korea blocks AI generated books from library deposits

ALT South Korea blocks AI generated books from library deposits

A partial amendment to the Libraries Act, which excludes "one-click publications" produced in short periods using generative artificial intelligence (AI) from library legal deposit requirements, passed the National Assembly's plenary session on Wednesday. Under current law, even AI-produced publications are subject to the legal deposit system, under which the National Library of Korea and the National Assembly Library pay compensation and hold the materials in their collections. The increase in AI-generated publications aimed at collecting these compensation payments has been cited as a problem, leading to budget waste. The amendment allows the director of the National Library of Korea to refuse legal deposit of AI publications following deliberation by the Library Materials Review Committee. It also establishes a legal basis for the government to recover legal deposit compensation obtained through fraudulent means.

I was just laid off by The Washington Post in the middle of a warzone. I have no words. I'm devastated.

Waking up without power, heat, or running water. (Again.) But the work here in Kyiv continues. Warming up in the car, writing in pencil — pen ink freezes — by headlamp. Despite how difficult this job can be, I am proud to be a foreign correspondent at The Washington Post.
