This little prayer card to Our Lady of Coromoto, patroness of Venezuela, was in my late father’s wallet for years. I pray today, now that María Corina Machado is back in her homeland, for peace, justice, and reconciliation in Venezuela. 🇺🇸🙏🇻🇪

Looking forward to read Martin’s first (of many) books. Definitely worth a read and follow.
Delighted to share the publication of my first book, "Petróleo y revolución: la geopolítica de Venezuela bajo Hugo Chávez y su desafío a Estados Unidos", published in Spanish by Sultana del Lago. The book examines how Hugo Chávez used Venezuela’s oil wealth as a geopolitical tool to advance the Bolivarian Revolution at home and abroad and challenge U.S. influence. Gracias totales to Steven Levitsky, @VasquezIan @martinezmeucci @jchidalgo @saryle @jcsosazpurua @rsalinasleon for their thoughtful comments ahead of publication. Available on Amazon and soon in bookstores across Venezuela and Latin America.

🇪🇺🇻🇪🎙️ | @MartinRodRodr on the future of Venezuela’s oil industry at the Rebuilding Venezuela Summit in the European Parliament: “I want to talk about 2 institutional proposals that I think could make our oil sector conducive to successful development. The first is to liberalize our energy industry, and by liberalize, I mean truly liberalize our energy industry. Allow the animal spirits of international oil companies, whether supermajors or wildcatters, to come into the country and do what they know how to do. The second, and perhaps even more important, is: how do we manage the wealth that is generated by these national oil companies? Venezuela has a long history of mismanaging the oil rent, and there’s a lot of academic literature on the pernicious effects that discretion in the management of oil revenues has on countries’ institutions, so I think we need to tackle these two issues together.”

¡Felicidades Martín! Has escrito un gran libro, que ya es referencia obligatoria para cualquier interesado en el mundo del petróleo. ¡Será un éxito total! Fuerte abrazo.

🚨🇻🇪 Rebuilding Venezuela requires deep reforms, strong institutions, and highly qualified professionals capable of implementing them. During the Rebuilding Venezuela Summit 2026, held at the European Parliament, Venezuelan experts and international leaders discussed the reforms needed to build a free, democratic, and prosperous Venezuela. Three key takeaways emerged from the discussion. 1️⃣ Accelerate Venezuela’s economic recovery by creating the conditions for businesses to invest and human capital to return. After 27 years of socialism, we can turn Venezuela into a country of opportunities and prosperity. 2️⃣ Liberalize the energy sector, including the oil, gas, and hydroelectric sectors, to maximize Venezuela’s energy potential. Turning Venezuela into the battery of the Americas is key for the region's economic security and technological development. 3️⃣ Put Venezuela’s best talent in charge of rebuilding our institutions and strategic infrastructure. From the Guri hydroelectric complex to the Central Bank and our ports, we need qualified professionals capable of getting the country working again. Here are all the interventions from the summit. 00:00 @StjepoBartulica — Rule of law, strong institutions, and accountability as foundations for rebuilding Venezuela. 04:00 @AdamBielan — Lessons from Poland demonstrate how economic reforms and freedom can transform a country. 08:20 @JraissatiJorge — Accelerating economic growth, restoring the energy sector, and bringing top professionals into public institutions. 19:34 @Barbaraadejesus — Venezuela’s historic opportunity and the challenges ahead in consolidating a genuine democratic transition. 30:10 @MarkusWiechel — Rebuilding functioning institutions, restoring trust, and learning from European democratic transitions. 37:31 @ArmandoArmas — Rule of law, decentralization, and political reforms to secure a lasting democracy. 1:04:55 @elsultanbitcoin — Restoring the electricity system is essential to reviving industry, increasing production, and improving living standards. 1:14:58 @AngelAlvaradoR — Macroeconomic stability, restoring production, and implementing reforms to accelerate Venezuela’s economic growth. 1:23:10 Jesús Lander — Restoring access to financing, expanding credit, and mobilizing capital toward productive sectors. 1:31:10 @PlanchartMarcos — Europe must expand its economic engagement with Venezuela and contribute to its reconstruction and democratic transition. 2:09:37 @cdager12 — Legal certainty, transparency, and compliance mechanisms to facilitate international investment. 2:17:19 @MartinRodRodr — Reforming the oil and gas sector to attract capital, reduce discretionary government intervention, and unlock Venezuela’s energy resources. 2:25:45 Luis C. Cano — Reforming public administration while preserving technical expertise and institutional knowledge. 2:34:40 @MaxRangeley — Harnessing artificial intelligence to strengthen justice, protect property rights, and modernize institutions. Venezuela’s reconstruction cannot remain a collection of good intentions. We need concrete reforms, investment, and qualified professionals capable of turning today’s opportunities into prosperity for millions of Venezuelans. ▶️ Watch the full Rebuilding Venezuela Summit 2026.

Amazing moment. Navi Pillay has received the Nobel Peace Prize ! bbc.co.uk/news/live/ck5yng9z… We are at the Nuremberg Court; I cannot think of a stronger symbol for her Nobel prize. We are all so thrilled! This is her first reactions upon hearing the news:

Approximately 54% to 60% of Mexico’s entire electricity grid relies directly on natural gas imported from the United States. Washington just demonstrated that it can cripple Mexico within 72 hours at will. The arbitrary 20% reduction in U.S. natural gas exports to Mexico was executed precisely as American production reached an all-time high in July 2026. One could be forgiven for thinking this is a veiled message designed to signal absolute leverage. While the domestic commentocracy naively invokes "long-term supply contracts," as if assuming the Trump administration doesn't treat contractual legalisms as irrelevant, the structural reality is that half of Mexico's national grid hangs by a Texan pipeline valve.

In my experience in policy, nobody said we have to configure tariffs in a specific manner because of the ADH paper. There were discussions of the sustainability of global imbalances, revenue and deficits, national security and the need for a robust manufacturing sector. Nor indeed do we have a good solution to the empirical problem here. Generalizing from well identified microeconomic studies is tough, and plausible identification in aggregate data is rare. The hard questions are difficult to study, as ever. Speaking personally, I became aware of the China shock when I was working in currency markets in 2010 marveling at their reserve accumulation (currency manipulation) while our manufacturing was contracting. When the ADH work came out, I thought, “great, academics are finally starting to get it,” but all it did was make my priors firmer. I never believed the numbers in any precise sense nor sought to calibrate policy to them.

🗣️ Laurent Castro, French professor and former political prisoner in Venezuela recently released, denounced: “El Rodeo 1 operates like a concentration camp heading toward an extermination camp.” “It’s not a prison where one has rights or access to lawyers. We are completely isolated for months… even years without a single communication with family.” “I witnessed torture with electricity, suffocation with plastic, and forced intubation under the pretext of feeding the prisoners.” State torture. Crimes against humanity. “A new type of torture… generating internal hemorrhages in the digestive system through tubes in the nose and throat.” This is not a jail. It’s a torture chamber. This is Venezuela today. This is Chavismo. Source: NTN24 -@Libertaria17082 #FreeThemAll #PoliticalPrisoner

Google offered to pay for the data center infrastructure upgrades outright. The utility said no, because that wouldn't go into their rate base. They restructured it as a prepayment instead so they could rate base it anyway.⁣ ⁣ Result: everyone's bill went up $5.77 a month.
