🦜 Birds belong in the wild, not on pet shop shelves.
Join Voters for Animal Rights and World Animal Protection US as we speak with NYC Council Members to urge their support for Intro 912 — legislation that would prohibit the sale of birds in pet shops citywide.
Birds sold in the pet trade often endure cramped conditions, are highly intelligent and social, and frequently end up abandoned or surrendered when owners aren't prepared for their complex needs. It's time New York City stops treating wildlife like merchandise.

🦜CAW CAW: Intro 912, the bill to prohibit the retail sale of birds in NYC pet stores, was just reintroduced by Council Member @HarveyforNY and co-sponsors @ChrisMarteNYC @CMShahanaHanif @susanzhuangnyc @galeabrewer @ShirleyAldebol @Lynn4NYC @juliej_won.
The bill would still allow adoptions from animal shelters & rescues, where thousands of birds await a loving forever home.
Most birds in pet stores come from cruel out-of-state bird mills — the bird equivalent of puppy mills — where they’re treated as inventory, not living beings. @MoveTheWorldUS documented egregious conditions in these bird mills earlier this year, and New York needs to stop funding these bird factories through pet store sales. We’ve also teamed up with @wildbirdfund and @AvianWelfare to help this bill soar.
We’ve already ended the retail sale of dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs in NYC. Birds are next. We need your help to get more co-sponsors, so please contact your @nyccouncil Member at vfar.org/birds
Let’s get squawking.

BREAKING NEWS!! WE WON!! #DUCKYEAH!!
HISTORY MADE IN NYC! 🦆✨
Today we celebrate a ground‑breaking victory for animal protection: Voters for Animal Rights and New York City have won their lawsuit against the foie gras industry, and the ban is officially in effect!
This isn’t just a legal win — it’s a historic moment in the movement for compassion. NYC is now leading the way by standing up to one of the most cruel and outdated practices in the food world.
“Voters For Animal Rights is overjoyed with this historic victory for animals and grateful that New York City’s right to govern itself remains intact,” said Allie Taylor, President of Voters For Animal Rights (VFAR). "Today’s ruling not only upholds the city’s ability to make decisions in the best interest of its residents, human and nonhuman alike, but also shows the power of citizens coming together for justice and compassion. This is a momentous step forward in creating a kinder, more humane world and it proves that meaningful change is possible when people refuse to accept cruelty as the status quo."
This win belongs to every advocate, supporter, volunteer, and compassionate voter who refused to accept cruelty as the status quo. 💜🐥

Today, we won! 🦆💜
After years of legal battles, organizing, and refusing to back down, New York City’s ban on the sale of foie gras has been upheld by the state’s Appellate Division — and we couldn’t be prouder of every single person who made this moment possible. VFAR is a proposed intervenor-appellant and an amicus curiae in the case.
