As settler violence surges and Israel restricts access to Palestinian farmland, American Jewish activists are helping farmers bring in their olive harvest. But their efforts are increasingly putting them at risk of detention and deportation by Israeli authorities | @gracekgilson 🔗Read more: haaretz.com/us-news/2026-10-… Credit: Brad Lander; Reuters; Leila Stillman-Utterback; Use under Section 27A of the Copyright Law

The Foreign Ministry’s lies fall apart under even the smallest amount of scrutiny. Those wondering what to believe should ask themselves this: if Israel’s primary goal is the peace security and stability of the West Bank which is the more logical way to achieve it?
The Israeli Foreign Ministry is lying. No coordination was required, and we were never told that it was. We were not in a restricted security area. We did not pass any checkpoints. Palestinian farmers do not — and should not — need permits to harvest their own olive fields. But they fear doing so, because the IDF doesn’t protect them from settler violence. We’re trying to model solidarity & co-existence between Jews and Palestinians, and to call attention to the horrors of the occupation. The Israeli government is trying to foment violence between Jews and Palestinians, and to make it impossible for Palestinians to harvest their olive groves, drive on their roads, or live in their homes.

When the response to Jews and Palestinians picking olives together is mass arrest, the problem is not the volunteers. It is the occupation. amny.com/politics/brad-lande…

Count on one more co-sponsor for the Stop the Settlements Act in January, @JoaquinCastrotx
Today, Israeli forces detained dozens of volunteers, including a congressional candidate and rabbis, in the West Bank. Days earlier, settlers attacked European diplomats and a Washington Post journalist. If American public servants, diplomats, and journalists are targeted, imagine what Palestinian families face every day. Congress should take up my bill, the Stop the Settlements Act, to impose sanctions on anyone driving settlements in the West Bank or Gaza, including construction companies and banks. It's backed by 59 members of Congress, including the bill's latest co-sponsors, @RepRaskin, @RepRobertGarcia, @RepJasonCrow, @RepDeborahRoss, @RepJasmine, and @RepDavids. nytimes.com/2026/10/21/nyreg…

This was not about harvesting olives. It was about harvesting headlines. Brad Lander’s latest stunt is nothing more than a calculated political provocation. Lander traveled to a foreign country, deliberately entered a restricted security area, and participated in an unauthorized activity without the required coordination. What makes this stunt even more outrageous is that his own team contacted Israeli representatives in the United States ahead of his visit and was explicitly informed that proper coordination with the relevant authorities was required. He chose to ignore those instructions. At a time of heightened security tensions, Israeli security forces have a responsibility to protect lives, prevent dangerous incidents, and maintain public order. Had anyone been injured as a result of his reckless political theater, Lander would undoubtedly have been among the first to demand that Israeli authorities intervene and provide protection. Brad Lander came looking for a confrontation. Now he is pretending to be its victim.

In the deepening chaos in the West Bank, the IDF detained several dozen American rabbis and volunteers, including my future Democratic colleague Brad Lander; Mattan Berner-Kadish, who grew up in my district; and at least 31 other American citizens helping Palestinian farmers try to harvest olives in the West Bank under the threat of violence. Meantime, vigilante settlers continue to terrorize Palestinians in the West Bank with scant consequences. Last week, out-of-control settlers injured an American journalist. Now, the IDF targets volunteers for helping Palestinians harvest olives. The eyes of the world are on the West Bank.

I’ve been detained by the IDF, along with a group of rabbis & volunteers. We were simply harvesting olives in a grove near Nehalim in the West Bank. The occupation is a crime under international law. Harvesting olives isn’t a crime under any law I know.

As Israel’s elections approach, how are Palestinian citizens of Israel thinking about their political participation? What factors are shaping voter turnout, and how are Palestinian communities responding to efforts at voter suppression and political exclusion? I discuss these questions and more in a recent episode of the PeaceCast podcast, exploring the dynamics shaping Palestinian political participation ahead of the elections. If you’re interested in understanding these developments, I invite you to listen! @NJNarrative 🎧 peacenow.libsyn.com/375-arab…

Breaking and of paramount importance. Europe is telling Israel in no uncertain terms: don't build E-1, and telling Israeli developers and financial institutions that if they take part in E-1, they risk grave consequences. The EU Council Conclusions published today articulate the shared strategic policy of the EU, and are endorsed by the heads of state and governments of the 27 member states - and they single out E-1: " The European Council urges Israel to immediately reverse the expansion of settlements, which are illegal under international law, including by withdrawing its tender for construction in the E1 area. It reiterates that businesses should not bid for construction contracts for E1 or other settlement developments and underlines the legal, economic and reputational consequences for businesses and financial institutions participating in settlement construction, including the risk of serious breaches of international law". You're not imagining. This is also endorsed by Germany, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic - those countries who are traditionally very cautious in these matters. The die is cast. The bidding period in the tenders for the first 1,234 residential units end three days from now, on October 19. The Netanyahu Regime will not balk. Whether lIsraeli developers and financial institutions will risk sanctions and participate in the bidding remains to be seen. consilium.europa.eu/media/4t…
