Coaches get so much criticism… from people who could never coach.
Players get so much criticism… from people who can’t play.
Officials get so much criticism… from people who made make terribles refs.

The cumulative data shows the midrange shot is a poor shot. However, most teams have one player, and some have a couple, who shoot elite percentages from midrange. For a coach to take away the midrange shot from a high-level scorer who has proved to be efficient is just silly.

A coach can care deeply about a player and still make decisions the player dislikes.
A player can respect a coach and still disagree with those decision.
Healthy relationships can survive disagreement.

Good coaches don’t discourage mid range jump shots. They encourage winning shot quality and teach players the WHY behind it.
Too many view shot quality as an insult to themselves or their kids (largely due to how we viewed/were taught the game growing up).
Shot quality is synonymous with basketball IQ, on both ends of the floor.
The mid range isn’t dead; the IQ around shot quality has just increased.
No metric matters more than shot selection. With very few exceptions, if you shoot > 20% of your total shots from the middy, you aren’t a winning team. Data across every level/league post maturation is black and white on this.

One of the most important life lessons that Basketball will teach you is that you can do everything right and still not get the results you wanted. Your response to that disappointment will tell everyone everything they need to know about you.
