Excellent piece I’ve been swimming there a long time and the deteriorating diversity and water quality very concerning. Hope people pay attention. Thank you. (New version as last tweet had unfortunate typo 🤣 - definitely swimming!)

It's been an incredible privilege to work with the team at Hakai Magazine on this piece about Lough Hyne, funded by the Pulitzer Center. Their attention on detail on every aspect, from the editing to the visuals, was heartening. A truly amazing experience! With huge gratitude. 🙏 hakaimagazine.com/features/f… @hakaimagazine @pew_literary @pulitzercenter @ProfileBooks @greystonebooks

Cargo vessels known as reefers are often used to transfer fuel, supplies etc to fishing vessels, allowing them to stay at sea for longer (and keep slaves, and overfish etc). Up until, it's been unclear who owns the reefers, but a new study shows that 65% of the reefer fleet are flagged to China, Russia and Panama. science.org/doi/10.1126/scia…. V interesting! #highseas #oceans

This year’s theme ‘Open Channels / Bealaigh Oscailte’ will centre on themes of dialogue, movement and exchange. In an ever more fractured world, this tenth edition will seek to give voice to why collective discourse and interchange are indispensable to our shared future and what we might do to keep the channels open.

Totally inexcusable: the management of mackerel fisheries by NE Atlantic coastal states. I have observed this developing over many years & now able to comment. This is a political failure. We have the science, control & enforcement, & industry good will. ices-taf.shinyapps.io/advice….

Please remember the rule, folks: Some summers are hotter than others, but every summer is now warmer than if the same weather patterns happened decades ago. The summer of 2024 was still warmer than the vast majority of the summers of Julia's childhood.
