More than 40 years ago, I arrived in Chicago in search of an idea. I was a young man looking for purpose, who believed deeply in America, was inspired by the Civil Rights Movement, and wanted to be a part of something larger. The America I believed in was one where everyone has opportunity, everyone is seen, everyone belongs—because that was an America that had a place for me, too.

On Juneteenth, we should rightly celebrate freedom won and those who fought for it. Yet we have to acknowledge not only injustices still uncorrected, but the ways those in power are seeking to undo the progress of decades.
We keep fighting.

Juneteenth is not only a celebration of freedom achieved; it is a call to action. It reminds us that the work of building a more just and equitable society continues. We owe it to those who came before us, and to those who will come after us to keep moving forward.

On Juneteenth, we honor the generations of Black New Yorkers whose struggle and determination brought us closer to justice.
At Foley Square, Lorenzo Pace's sculpture stands as a powerful tribute to that legacy. Our documentary explores Dr. Pace's life, his work, and his decades-long commitment to the ongoing fight for liberation.
This Juneteenth, let us not forget that pursuit of freedom is not buried in the past. It is the responsibility of our future.

The City Council could vote to override Mayor Mamdani’s veto of 175-B as soon as this Thursday. If passed, this bill will be used to silence our First Amendment rights.

If the goal is to create an environment where no immigrant is willing to brave a court date where they might be suddenly disappeared into detention by anonymous thugs, then ICE is succeeding. The only path forward is to get #ICEOut of our courts!

VICTORY! We applaud @NYCMayor for vetoing Intro 175B & standing for free speech rights & safety. 100+ orgs & unions & thousands of NYers made it clear: yes to our rights & #NoTo175B. Let's keep pressure up! @NYCCouncil must vote NO & sustain veto. Act now: tinyurl.com/noto175b
We are grateful that the Mayor has vetoed Intro 175B, protecting freedom of speech and worker power.
We look forward to working with the administration to strengthen workers’ rights and preserve our Constitutional rights from federal attacks.
Last month, the City Council passed two bills related to the constitutional right to protest — one for houses of worship, and one for educational institutions.
Today, I’m letting one bill go into effect, and vetoing the other. I’d like to take a moment to explain why.
As Mayor, I will always make sure the right to protest, prayer and protection are guaranteed for every New Yorker.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Mamdani’s claim of vetoing one bill while “letting one bill go into effect” omits context: the houses of worship buffer-zone bill passed the City Council with a veto-proof 44–5 majority. Mamdani vetoed having buffer-zones at schools, which passed without a veto-proof majority.

By vetoing Intro 175-B, @NYCMayor has taken an important step to protect students, educators, & school communities. Schools are places of learning & expression, not zones of surveillance or suppression. More than 100 organizations & unions & thousands of New Yorkers support VETO.
