The repeated massacres of Orthodox Christians in Arsi and surrounding areas of Oromia expose a grave and sustained failure of the Ethiopian state to fulfill its most fundamental duty: protecting its citizens. For years, targeted killings, burned and looted churches, forced displacement, and terrorized communities have continued, documented by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, EHRCO, and international media. Whatever the perpetrators’ affiliations, the government cannot escape responsibility for a pattern of violence that has persisted under its watch despite repeated warnings and appeals. Blaming armed rebels while civilians continue to die is no substitute for accountability. When a government repeatedly fails to protect vulnerable communities, investigate atrocities, and bring perpetrators to justice, its credibility and legitimacy are called into question. These massacres are not merely a security failure; they expose the corrosive consequences of impunity. The government must ensure independent investigations, prosecute those responsible regardless of affiliation, and deliver effective protection on the ground.
