Protecting your heart is just one piece of the puzzle. New guidance on the four stages of a woman’s life highlights the connection between heart health, hormones and mental well-being to help women get care that fits her life. The American Heart Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists and Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine developed this landmark framework, announced today, to support a woman’s heart health across her life course. The female life stages are: 1. Around the first period (around ages 8-15); 2. Menstrual cycling (around ages 15-44); 3. Menopause transition or perimenopause (around ages 45-51); and 4. Postmenopause (around age 51 and after). Each stage plays an important role in current and future cardiovascular health. The recommendations in the 2026 Compendium on Women's Cardiovascular Health Across the Life Course support more female-specific screening, prevention and treatment considerations throughout a woman's life. For more information on the female life stages and how to take care of your heart through every stage, visit goredforwomen.org/stages-of-….

Small-cell lung cancer is one of the most aggressive and lethal cancers worldwide. Although treatments have improved overall survival, most patients ultimately have disease progression. Research findings from the phase 3 TAISHAN-302 trial are summarized in a new Quick Take video. nej.md/4hZz1CY

It was a great honour to present the results of the phase 3 INTerpath-001 clinical trial at the #ESMO26 Congress in Madrid. This international trial included 1137 patients, across 157 sites, whose melanoma had been surgically removed, but who were at very high risk of it returning. The trial showed adding #intismeran autogene, an mRNA based individualised neoantigen therapy, to pembrolizumab reduced the risk of recurrence or death by 42%. This is the first phase 3 study to show that a treatment built from the unique ‘fingerprint’ of a patient’s own tumour can reduce the risk of recurrence or death from cancer. That fingerprint is read by sequencing the tumour, then a ‘wanted poster’ of the cancer is made as mRNA, showing the immune system exactly what to look for and attack. Having succeeded in melanoma, this proof of concept could mark the beginning of a foundational shift in how we treat cancer. 𝘏. 𝘱𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘪 infection is an infectious disease, and treatment regimens should ideally be guided by antimicrobial-susceptibility testing whenever possible. 🔗 nej.md/4Bj3O58 Both phenotypic (culture-based) and molecular methods of antimicrobial-susceptibility testing are available (seen in figure). Culture-based testing remains the reference standard because it is the only method that can ascertain the susceptibility of isolates to all antibiotics commonly used for eradication. Molecular antimicrobial-susceptibility testing offers greater efficiency than culture-based testing by eliminating the need for 𝘏. 𝘱𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘪 culture. Molecular-based testing can be conducted with fresh or formalin-fixed gastric-tissue samples (used for histopathological examination) and successfully cultured isolates. More recently, gastric-fluid samples obtained from a swallowed gastric string have emerged as a cost-effective alternative culture-based testing method. Stool-based molecular antimicrobial-susceptibility testing is now available, which avoids invasive endoscopy. Commercial polymerase-chain-reaction–based kits are now available for identifying 𝘏. 𝘱𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘪 resistance to clarithromycin and levofloxacin by detecting specific mutations in the 𝘏. 𝘱𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘪 23S ribosomal RNA and gyrA genes, respectively. A meta-analysis reported high accuracy of these molecular methods for detecting antibiotic resistance in gastric-biopsy samples, with sensitivity and specificity of 96% and 96%, respectively, for clarithromycin resistance and 97% and 99% for quinolone resistance. Learn more in the Review Article “𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘪 Infection — Advances, Challenges, and the Road Ahead” by Hong Li, MD, PhD, Francis Megraud, MD, and Barry J. Marshall, MD: nej.md/4Bj3O58
