The hardest part about being a contrarian is knowing when not to be.
The mind virus of conspiratorial thinking has been devastating. It completely paralyzes analysis and reduces everything to entertainment, fodder for clicks, traffic, and attention. It’s like a caricature of the Straussian close reading of texts: the “real” meaning is always hidden from view, and being unable to see it means you don’t have access to esoteric insights and knowledge. In reality, you’re just reading it wrong.
In the case of Russia right now, nobody really knows what’s happening. But that doesn’t matter; all you have to do is come up with the most absurd theory, and the more absurd it is, the truer it must be.

Never seen a more flagrant and violent breach of privacy in my life, and probably never will. Doubtful that a privacy violation will ever even be able to compare to the scale of this evil and deliberate attack.
Samsung should be eviscerated for this. Criminal charges please

Elon Musk lies again. Civilian Starlink was already speed-limited, and every terminal had to be whitelisted. Yet Starshield was throttled too, which can’t be explained by alleged ToS violations. His explanations keep contradicting each other, making his claims even less credible

I've been spammed with password reset demand from my Microsoft account. At a rate of 2 per days. Not phishing, just pure brute force.
Password resets needs 6 digits they send by email. So it doesn't seem likely to find anything.
But a malicious actor which try every day, with a dump of millions of leaked account he found somewhere?
Well he will crack a few of those with brute force every day...
Use 2FA.

The whole idea that shooting a retreating attacker is morally wrong seems predicated on the idea that said attacker is somehow running on *one-way feet*, and wouldn’t THINK of firing at you from cover once he reaches said cover.

If someone from Somalia with a fake identity can serve in the United States Congress for years without getting caught, imagine still believing that illegals aren’t voting in U.S. elections.

Ukrainian troops on the Kupiansk front are riding carts through large-diameter pipes to get around faster.
The 2nd National Guard Corps "Khartia" announced that the Ukrainian Defense Forces conducted an underground counteroffensive operation - "Veles," advancing more than 15 km into enemy rear areas in the Kupyansk sector.
The grouping combined the underground assault with surface actions and UAV strikes, effectively denying the occupiers the opportunity to maneuver into Kupyansk's rear. As a result of the operation, over 30 occupiers were taken prisoner, and Russian casualties exceeded 100.

Ukraine has an asymmetrical advantage here: the predominant high altitude winds that balloons follow, flow towards the east.
So Ukraine can launch balloons that naturally drift towards Russian targets most of the time, while Russia only rarely gets an opportunity.
Reports from Moscow indicate that balloons carrying suspended explosives or small drones are approaching the Russian capital. #Russia
Unabombed people.
Against drones, they'd be safer inside than standing outdoors under a hundred tons of glass.
Finally!
Hopefully this is intentional. Russian civil aviation should have been shutdown by force long ago.
❗️❗️UAV debris is visible at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport after the ongoing Ukrainian attack. Moscow airports remain closed, with many flights delayed. #Russia

True story indeed! Two Italian taxmen showed their gov badges (outside Italian jurisdiction and without any warrant or service order) to demand free entry to the conference (as if they don't get enough free stuff living off tax extortion). Luckily the organizers made them pay regular tickets. If you meet them around* and they ask you questions, remember not to talk about your boating trips in any detail).
(* it may be illegal for me to post any picture of them, so I will not. I'll just post, as theoretical example, a completely fake and imaginary Grok-generated picture, without any connection to real people, which happens to comes from a prompt which is partially derived from the Grok-generated description of a real picture I've been sent.)

I’m at @McDonalds rolling a new Certificate, does anyone else want anything?
Quite possibly some of the most insane confined space combat in the history of warfare.
Remember that gas masks don't stop CO2... I hope they have positive pressure ventilation on the whole pipe.

This story shows how hilariously broken online identity verification is from all relevant angles.
1. Your SSN, DOB, address history, etc. are sitting in countless data breaches and data-broker dumps. They’re cheap and widely available to basically anyone who looks.
2. KYC/AML mostly just checks that the data exists and matches a real person. It doesn’t confirm the person signing up is actually the real person behind that identity.
Result: Amanda Smith spent three nights in jail and now faces up to six years in prison over a $1,000 CashApp scam account opened with her SSN and DOB. It wasn't necessarily opened by her, and the phone, IP, device, address, and other details don’t match.
The funniest (and yes, saddest) part is CashApp wouldn't give her information about the account because she can’t prove she’s the owner. Her personal info was good enough to open the account, but not good enough to access it in the future, apparently. To be clear, CashApp is likely just following the law here.
Anyway, we need to burn it all down and start fresh.
New: someone made a CashApp account in her name. She spent 3 nights in jail and now faces up to 6 years in prison
Amanda Smith was arrested because a scam led to a CashApp account in her name. But she says she didn't make it, and the data doesn't line up 404media.co/amanda-smith-ope…

One good comment to the UK Online Safety Act consultation: age verification mandates are exposing UK Internet users to unbelievable levels of opsec and identity theft risk, drive people to the dark web, and could be abused by future govts.

Ukraine ask is very simple, it has to give something up to russia, it needs a guarantee that the war will stop.
A real guarantee.
If there is no guarantee, what's the point of giving anything up to russia? To continue the same fight but on worse terms?

@peterktodd at Marathon Foundation trying to inflate bitcoin: still 0

Replying to @MarathonFusion
In 2025, we published a bold proposal to use fusion reactors for gold production.
And now we’ve done it: Mercury transmuted into stable gold, using fusion neutrons, at 10x the record set by CERN in 2025.
We’ve reduced alchemy to a series of difficult but tractable engineering problems.
