Space Shuttle Discovery lights its main engines on the pad, then sits there for about 6.6 seconds before it's allowed to leave. The sparks at the start burn off loose hydrogen under the engines so it doesn't ignite in one big bang. Then the three main engines start, and the computers watch the thrust build. Only if it all looks right do they light the boosters and blow the bolts holding it down. That order is on purpose. The main engines can be shut down on the pad. Once the solid boosters light, nobody can stop them. Video credit: spaceflighteveryday

Veteran astronauts Fred Haise and Gordon Fullerton completed the fifth and final glide test aboard Enterprise OTD in 1977. The Approach and Landing Tests (ALT) took place between February and October 1977 to test the Shuttle's flight characteristics prior to its first spaceflight in 1981.

This is your periodic reminder that when the Soviets didn't have an aircraft large enough to carry and drop their Buran prototype like NASA had done with Enterprise, they just added turbojets and made OK-GLI take off under its own power.
