So far this June, 0.2 percent of the planet has experienced record low temperatures.
Meanwhile, 60 percent of the planet has been much warmer than average, including 7.2 percent that has experienced record warmth, considering data from 1940 to 2026.

Key West has bottomed out at a sultry 84ยฐF again today. That tied the May monthly record for the 4th time this month!
Record warm mornings are growing exponentially, especially near the Gulf. 2/3rds of Key Westโs record warm mornings have occurred in the last 25 years. Itโs very similar in the rest of the Gulf region. Thanks @extremetemps for the H/T!

New article on Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica today claims that the ice shelf is deteriorating much faster now leading the team at the British Antarctic Survey to write an obituary for it. These quotes sound alarming, and they are. But deep in the article they mention that this is a โgradually developing crisis rather than an immediate emergency.โ
Still with comments like this from scientists itโs a good reminder that a whole lot of ice and sea level is sitting behind very fragile ice shelves at the bottom of the World!
"Suddenly, large areas are just falling to pieces," says Christian Wild, from the University of Innsbruck in Austria. "It looks like a windscreen that's shattering."
โMassive cracks have emerged around the pinning point, where an underwater ridge once anchored the floating ice in position.โ
"It's essentially in free fall now," says Mr Wild, noting the pace has quickened further over the past five months.
โFresh rifts have appeared along the grounding line, where the glacier transitions from land to floating ice.โ
Hereโs a video I made explaining the ice shelf holds back the Glacier and how the grounding line is destabilizing. Audio up!

An El Niรฑo signature is emerging.
The developmental pace has been quicker than at this time in 1982, 1997 and 2015, considering traditional indices over the past week.
But, based on new relative indices, the 1997 and 2015 events were slightly further advanced than 2026 is now.

Itโs been so dry in Florida and the Southeast that we need 20 to 30โ of rain in 3-months to wipe out the drought. Iโve never seen such large numbers over such a large area!
Basically this means it simply wonโt happen for most in the near futureโฆit may take the better part of summer to make up the deficit. El Niรฑo will certainly help finish off whatโs left of the drought by next winter. #florida #drought

Plants say spring is here! ๐ฑ
About 190 million Americans have experienced an earlier-than-normal spring leaf-out, based on the behavior of lilac and honeysuckle.
Leaves emerged 30 to 50 days earlier than normal near the Rockies and in parts of the Plains, breaking records.

This is a chilling, eerie map โ it depicts all the tornado emergencies to ever be issued in the United States.
Tornado emergencies are the most urgent, life-or-death alert that the National Weather Service can issue. In the past 27 years, there have only been 314 tornado emergencies issued.
They're reserved only for anticipated catastrophic, high-end tornadoes โ intense-to-violent EF3, EF4 and EF5 monsters on a crash-course with population centers.
On April 27, 2011, there were 37 of them issued. THIRTY SEVEN.
The tornado emergency was invented on May 3, 1999, when a mile-wide F5 tornado was barreling up the H. E. Bailey Turnpike into the Oklahoma City metro area. Forecasters knew that dozens would perish, and that entire neighborhoods would be obliterated. At the National Weather Service in nearby Norman on the University of Oklahoma campus, the warning meteorologist on duty felt a run-of-the-mill tornado warning wouldn't cut it. Their 6:57 p.m. message reflected it.
The warning began โtornado emergency in south Oklahoma City,โ the phrase โtornado emergencyโ never having been used before. The pioneered phrasing is now reserved only for the most significant events with the highest fatality potential, famously being issued on May 20, 2013, as another EF5 tornado barreled into Moore. (Joplin, Missouri SHOULD have been a tornado emergency, but infamously wasn't.)
This tornado season, take ALL tornado warnings seriously โ but, if you find yourself in a tornado emergency, know what it means. If you hear the phrase "tornado emergency," know that the decisions you make will be critical for survival.
