The Suns of the Mississippi: How the Natchez Built a Kingdom of Divine Rank Along the bluffs of the Mississippi River near present-day Natchez, Mississippi, the Natchez people maintained one of the most stratified societies in the Southeast. French observers in the early 1700s documented a rigid ranking system that set them apart from their neighbors. At the top stood the Great Sun, a paramount chief believed to descend from the Sun itself. Power passed matrilineally: the next Great Sun was always the son of a royal woman of the Sun lineage. Below the Suns came the Nobles, then the Honored People, and at the bottom the commoners the French called Stinkards. Marriage rules mixed the ranks deliberately. A Sun man typically married a Stinkard woman, and their children ranked lower than pure Suns, which helped prevent the upper class from becoming completely closed. They lived in villages clustered around the Grand Village, where the Great Sun and the war chief known as Tattooed Serpent (Obalalkabiche) resided. Platform mounds supported temples that held perpetual fires and the bones of past leaders. Agriculture centered on corn, beans, and squash, supplemented by hunting and fishing. Pottery, woven textiles from mulberry bark, and earthwork construction showed skilled craftsmanship. Religion centered on the Sun. When a high-ranking Sun died, retainers were expected to accompany them. French chronicler Antoine-Simon Le Page du Pratz recorded the 1725 funeral of Tattooed Serpent in detail. Wives, servants, a warrior, a doctor, and others volunteered or were selected. They were given tobacco or other substances to dull them, then strangled with cords. An infant was also sacrificed. The bodies were buried in or near the temple mound. The Great Sun himself was prevented from following his brother in death. These practices struck the French as extreme, yet they were integral to Natchez beliefs about the afterlife and status. Contact with Europeans began with René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, in 1682. By the early 1700s the Natchez numbered roughly 2,000 to 3,500 people in several villages. The French built Fort Rosalie in 1716 amid Natchez lands to control trade and plant tobacco. Relations were uneven. Some leaders, including Tattooed Serpent, favored alliance; others leaned toward the British. Disease and earlier conflicts reduced their numbers. In November 1729 the situation collapsed. The French commandant at Fort Rosalie, Sieur de Chépart, demanded the Natchez abandon a village for his own plantation. On November 28 the Natchez struck in a coordinated attack. Warriors entered the fort and settlements under the pretext of a hunt, then killed most of the French men. Contemporary accounts list roughly 140 men, 35 women, and 56 children dead. Women, children, and enslaved Africans were largely spared as captives. The fort and houses were burned. French retaliation, aided by Choctaw allies, followed quickly. In 1730 and 1731 campaigns drove the Natchez from their homeland. Hundreds were killed or captured. Many captives, including a young Great Sun, were sold into slavery in Saint-Domingue. Survivors scattered to the Chickasaw, Creek (Muscogee), Cherokee, and others. The independent Natchez chiefdom, with its temples, Suns, and ranked society, ceased to exist in its former form. Today Natchez descendants are recognized as a constituent people within the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. The Grand Village site preserves the mounds where the Great Sun once lived. The story remains one of the clearest documented examples of a hierarchical Mississippian-style chiefdom meeting European colonization and not surviving as an independent nation. The name Natchez still marks the landscape. The city of Natchez, Mississippi, sits on the bluffs where the French built Fort Rosalie in 1716 and later took the tribe’s name. The Natchez Trace Parkway follows the old overland trail whose southern end was the Natchez landing, used by boatmen returning north after floating goods downriver. A smaller community named Natchez survives in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians remains a preserved site with its ceremonial mounds along St. Catherine Creek, the heart of their historic territory.
