Last week saw the premier of the short film "Unauthorised Absence". This film and its messages couldn't be more important. The lived reality of so many parents - when their children are struggling and their lives are in turmoil - is that they are met with judgement. 1/🧵

The weak analogies continue 🤪 Where to begin with this? 👇🙄 “Criticising a school for having a higher than average rate is like criticising a hospital for having a greater mortality rate than the cinema next door”.

“There is a huge disconnect between government policy…and what’s actually happening in thousands of homes up and down the country,” warns the film’s writer, who says families are being pushed towards home education by fines and prosecutions.

We’re teenage girls fighting to ban the use of school uniform in porn. Why have you left it up to us? No one should have to feel nervous about walking to school in clothes designed for children. It’s time for law to end the sexualisation of minors theguardian.com/commentisfre…

Powerful priests. Powerful politicians. Reputations protected while children suffered abuse. When religious authority & political power shield individuals from scrutiny, accountability is evaded and survivors are silenced. NI government must move forward with statutory inquiry.

The first child in the ad hugs the grandparents. The second child is uncomfortable with physical touch. The ad is highlighting differences in childrens needs and the imp of consent. It is not campaigning against grandparents. Dear god in heaven!!!
Replying to @OCallaghanJim
It goes without saying that having loving grandparents in a child’s life is an incredibly positive thing to be cherished and not something to be campaigned against.

SHE FILMED THE TRUTH INSIDE BRITISH CLASSROOMS In 2005 science teacher Alex Dolan strapped on a hidden camera and walked into 4 schools in Leeds and London. What she filmed was not shocking to anyone who has ever set foot in a British secondary school. Pupils fighting on desks. Kids swearing in teachers faces. Staff shuffling the worst behaved pupils out of the building the moment Ofsted @Ofstednews turned up to inspect. @Channel4 aired the footage as Undercover Teacher, part of the Dispatches @C4Dispatches strand. Leeds City Council went to the High Court to try to block it. A judge refused the injunction and ruled the programme served the public interest. Watching a school fake its way through an inspection turns out to be exactly the kind of thing the public has an interest in. So naturally the system did what it does best. It went after the person who filmed the problem instead of the problem itself. The General Teaching Council spent 4 years building a case against Dolan. In March 2009 it found her guilty of unacceptable professional conduct for breaching the trust of the pupils she filmed. Not the staff accused of hiding disruptive kids from inspectors. Not the school that burned through 26 supply teachers in a single year. Her. She was suspended from teaching for 12 months. Channel 4's own deputy head of news at the time said publicly it was wrong to punish a whistleblower for this kind of work and that the messenger should not be shot. Press Gazette @pressgazette called the ruling a sad day for journalism. That was generous. Dolan left teaching and became a weather presenter for BBC Look East, which is either the most British redemption arc going or proof that forecasting rain is safer than forecasting institutional failure. No school she filmed faced a tribunal. No member of staff accused of gaming an Ofsted inspection faced a tribunal. The teacher who exposed it did. SOURCES @pressgazette @tes @C4Dispatches

🚨NEW🚨 Permanent Secretary backs Education Minister’s boycott order despite warning that it could be ‘unlawful’ The Education Minister and his top civil servant are remaining defiant that officials will not attend their scrutiny committee, even after a warning that those actions could be ‘unlawful’. The education committee was previously given legal advice that if Paul Givan was to continue to uphold his boycott then it could be unlawful. Under section 44(1) of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 the committee has the power to call for persons or papers, creating a legal duty for them to be presented. Committee members were advised that “if the minister were to direct a departmental official not to attend” then “this would be a breach of the Code of Conduct as this would be asking the departmental official to act in a way that would conflict with the Code of Ethics by directing unlawful behaviour”. No matter what your political views, this is not good governance. Children and young people in NI deserve so much better from their Minister.
