Our new study, published today in @JAMANetworkOpen, estimates that 75% of NFL players who died between 2008 and 2023 had CTE.
This is not a measure of all current or former players. It does not mean 75% of current players have CTE, and not everyone with CTE develops symptoms.
The findings reinforce two priorities: supporting former players and families today, and reducing repetitive head impacts to protect future generations.
CTE is serious, but this number should not mean hopelessness. Research is advancing, and we can improve care and make sports safer.
Former players and families: you’re not alone. DM me to connect with support and explore research opportunities, if you’re interested.

The Protect College Sports Act sells out college athletes and bails out the NCAA. Here's what I told @stephenasmith

Listen to these Stanford football players.
They’re using their voice and their power to fight for a better deal.
I support them—and I’m inspired by their leadership.
NEW: The Senate is on the verge of passing the "Protect College Sports Act" after lobbying from Amazon, Disney, Paramount and more.
The bill would cap player compensation, but fails to address massive coach salaries, buyouts, or private equity.
Actual college athletes have been left out of the process, so while the NCAA would get an anti-trust exemption, players wouldn't get a seat at the table.
We talked to Stanford football players to learn more.

Not Concussion Settlement related but it affects many of the same players. You need to take a look.
This morning I sent an urgent newsletter regarding #NFL Disability's latest attempt to strip #Black retired players of important rights. Please repost. We need to get this out.

Stanford football players start a fraternity with the CFBPA in a move that could eventually pave the way for a union of college football players that bargains with conferences. I discuss the innovative move and the complexities, especially with labor law: sportico.com/law/analysis/20….

Stanford football players take a step toward forming a collective bargaining group. It’s a long road that others have failed to complete.
This time might be different.

I agree with Anderson.
Collective bargaining for some college sports is inevitable.
It’s just a question of when.
"It's inevitable more so than possible. It needs to happen. The question is when," says Stanford center Fisher Anderson about his team's new chapter of the CFBPA, an initial step toward collective bargaining with their conference. Details here:

Excellent newsletter by @JasonStahl__ on the state of college sports as 2026 nears.
Can't have a CBA without a union, and can't have a union without employment recognition (among other steps along the way). The basics of labor law can't be circumvented. jasonstahl.substack.com/p/a-….
Replying to @heitner
In @JasonStahl__'s newsletter, he writes that there are no shortcuts for athlete unionization and collective bargaining. He says that media spectacles of premature "CBA negotiations" without players in the room aren't authentic grassroots movements. jasonstahl.substack.com/p/a-…
