In ππππ§ππππ πππ π πΆππ’ππ‘ππ¦ (2024), Dr. Nathanael Mathews revisits the history of a Swahili-speaking Afro-Arab diaspora connecting East Africa and Oman.
Similarly, in πΆπππ πππΜπ (2022), Beata Umubyeyi Mairesse explores the fate of Afro-Belgian MΓ©tis children forcibly separated from their families during Belgian colonial rule in Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Despite their different historical contexts, both books illuminate underdocumented diasporic histories whose cultural traces endure across Eastern African societies, Belgium, and Oman.

βFocusing on the life of Kagaju, a Rwandan mother whose two sons were taken without her consent and adopted by a white Belgian family, this article brings to light the overlooked experiences of Rwandan mothers of colonial MΓ©tis whose mixed-βraceβ children were forcibly removed under Belgian colonial rule and who remain largely absent from both public memory and feminist scholarship. In this article, the term βMΓ©tisβ refers to children born to African mothers and European (predominantly Belgian) fathers during the colonial period.β

The closure of this objectively brilliant department raises many questions indeed
Nottingham was 6th for modern languages in the 2021 REF and is the only university in East Midlands providing language courses. The closure of an objectively brilliant department by a Russell Group university raises questions about the 2015 decision to uncap student numbers and leave UK HE provision entirely to market forces timeshighereducation.com/newβ¦
What about staff?

The worst news for my brilliant former colleagues
The University of Nottingham has confirmed that it will close its music and languages departments as it presses ahead with more than 500 job cuts despite widespread opposition from staff and students #highered #jobcuts

TRIBUTE TO DAFROZA MUKARUMONGI-GAUTHIER
Today, we mourn the passing of Dafroza Mukarumongi-Gauthier, a courageous survivor who dedicated her life to the pursuit of truth, justice and accountability for the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi.
Together with her husband, Alain Gauthier, she tirelessly worked to track those accused of genocide who had fled to France and to ensure that survivors and victims were not forgotten.
Her courage, determination and commitment to justice will remain part of Rwandaβs enduring memory.
May she rest in eternal peace.
Imana imuhe iruhuko ridashira.
