Typhoons and mountains do not mix. Watch as Champi is devoured by northern Taiwan The eye is obliterated and the storm torn apart.

AI models have been brought down to earth—just when everyone was getting worshippy about them. For days, physical models insisted #Typhoon #CHAMPI would hit Taiwan while Google DeepMind insisted it would cleanly miss. CHAMPI is now clobbering Taiwan. Ouchies for Google DeepMind.

This is one of the most terrifying thought-experiments for us in the Atlantic Basin. If you put Super Typhoon Champi in the Gulf and compare her to the strongest known Atlantic Hurricanes, none of them will be able to match her combination of extreme winds (185+ MPH) and huge core size. The West Pacific, without contest, is where the most monstrous storms on Earth are born.
And just for curiosity, here is what it would look like if Champi were magically teleported into the middle of the Gulf.

😮 Comparing El Nino’s Current State: 2026 makes 1997 look like Child’s Play! Who lived in #Florida in 1997-1998? I was a whipper-snapper weatherman in #Tampa back then. It was a crazy winter. The strongest El Niño on record brought Florida’s worst #tornado outbreak and more than triple the normal winter rainfall. 🌧️ In the image below I made an apples to apples comparison of sea surface temperature anomalies on Oct 20th. I thought it would reveal a closer comparison. Instead it shows 2026 is simply in a league of its own. Thus we expect big impacts on the winter weather. It’s important to note though that every El Niño event is different. We know it will be very active and wet in Florida, but we simply don’t know exactly how and where it will materialize. Tornadoes are more likely, but not guaranteed. It will be rainier than normal, but 3-4X like 1997? We just don’t know yet.

/FR

This storm is extremely impressive. It is extremely difficult for a tropical cyclone with a core of this size with a 30-40 nm eye to produce winds up to 175 mph let alone 185 mph. And it reaching a pressure below 900 mb is even harder to do. And it has had 180+ for 18 hours...
More EYE candy for ya from Category 5 Super Typhoon Champi...

This is what a textbook successful eyewall replacement cycle looks like. It can be the beginning of the end for most storms, but for #Champi, it went nearly perfect and it has now become a 155kt/899mb buzzsaw. Immense energy required to produce this, with seamless execution.

#Champi back to Category 5 after EWRC completion. CDO is thinner than expected, maybe due to quick SEF formation which can be common on storms who previously peaked at or below 900mbar. 140-145kt current. ACE production in overdrive, likely to be 50 total out of this storm.
