BCU have put 188 staff at risk of redundancy, (inc @bcu_ucu secretary) whilst attempting to force through subsidiary for new academic staff with no TPS creating 2-tier workforce. Huge branch meeting yesterday, overwhelming vote to move immediately to dispute on both attacks. @ucu

This is a brilliant new book by @grsbrown a rich history from below remembering a organisation and movement that redefined the contours of racism and anti racism in modern Britain and was that rare thing - a success, defeating the National Front. Order your copy now!

If anyone is about 18th March I'll be giving a public seminar for the Manchester Uni history department. The talk will be exploring photographs of industrial struggle, race and resistance and 'Bolton's Grunwick', a mill strike in 1978. All welcome! events.manchester.ac.uk/even…

What a book! A gripping road trip through Black Britain, a rich study of culture and resistance outside of the trodden London stories. Out in April, this is one to read by @Lanre_Bakare

I will be backing Rhiannon Lockley (@illdoitanyway) for UCU Vice-President and the wider @UcuLeft slate. It is crucial that the union leadership we elect will fight to defend post-16 education, respect democratic mandates, and seek to build a combative, member-led union.

A wonderful candidate. We are very lucky in UCU to have Rhiannon as a grassroot activist who seems to be involved in every key struggle as well as leading her branch - she truly supports democracy and action from below. Please vote for her in the UCU election ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽

"A general strike is a strike of workers in all or most industries" - is that the best definition of a general strike?

These Labour government figures are so arrogant and out of touch. Starmer did not ‘let’ Diane stand he was forced to back down. An incredibly nasty government who think they can just shut people up who dare to speak out against their viscous cuts to working class people
Diane Abbott is wrong about Starmer taking the DPP pension. Slandering and lying about the PM on telly is not a good look. Incredibly narcissistic and painful to watch. He let you stand for Labour and you throw it back in his face.

Last day of museum work today, researching 1926 general strike, before the break. Feeling thankful for great colleagues who have made my return from maternity leave so much easier. Thinking of Palestine and my Palestinian friends today and always, but particularly this Christmas

I'd like to write something, maybe short, on the 1926 General Strike, the British Empire and race. This is a new topic for me! Any reading recommendations?

Thinking about the General Strike as 2026 is its centenary. In the museum/heritage sector how can we remember conflict within the nation, how do we avoid the nostalgia or celebration built into some of these anniversary events and how do we learn from defeat without defeatism?

Gradually getting through Ken Loach's brilliant Days of Hope on this history which aired on BBC in 1975. The 50th anniversary was tied up with the victories of the miners. What about the 100th? Would love a documentary by Steve McQueen or similar. youtube.com/watch?v=0u019DvY…

Eleven years since I last saw a dentist, my name languishing on a waiting list somewhere, I'd given up hope at being seen. But today is a special day for me, as, out of the blue, I've finally been offered an NHS dentist! My first check up next month🦷🪥🥳🤞

Up until now I've had a good record with zero fillings. But perhaps this is because of my lack of dentistry visits... For those of you with fillings, did you have a feeling that a cavity had emerged?
