On Wednesday, world chess champion Garry Kasparov tied Deep Blue, the IBM supercomputer that can examine two hundred million positions per second, in the fourth game of their six-game series.
Earlier in the week, Kasparov admitted he committed a catastrophic blunder in game two, when he failed to force a draw by moving rook to E8. Opting instead for a Caro-Kann Defense, that soon transposed into a Pribyl defense. Which, after Deep Blue moved bishop to E7, gave him the advantage with his Knight position.
With all due respect to Mister Kasparov... what the hell were you thinking?!?

my mother had to read Chaucer in its original middle English at Marlborough high school and write essays about it, and basically thought the education system spent her whole life dismantling the classical education. she had something of a point.

Do the university presidents next
"Law firms that struck deals with President Donald Trump in early 2025 can expect to be subpoenaed by the House Judiciary Committee next year, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said."

There really was a golden period of web writing (pre socials) when you would get up every day and check Salon, Slate, Gawker, Jezebel, Pitchfork, Hipster runoff… maybe even Perez to remind you what never to be. RIP
This is so sad. I’m 54 years old and started reading Salon when I was in college. It was early proof that you could do great journalism on the web and (along with suck.com) made me think maybe I could make a living writing on the internet

The good, old internet is pretty much dead and gone
Today, after 31 years, we are saddened to announce that Salon is ceasing publication. It has been an extraordinary privilege. salon.com/2026/11/05/goodbye…
Out here worried about trump vetoing everything Dems pass when all Dems need to do is send Abdul El-Sayed to the White House in a tight pants and shirt to meet with trump for 2 seconds and that man will not remember what a veto is.

Think bigger: let’s get rid of the Electoral College, now that the GOP has to stare down the possibility of a D Presidential ticket carrying the state by 10,000 votes and losing every last electoral vote.

I so deeply distrust this. I don't know why people would think in this day and age it would hold up under pressure.

Good morning especially to the university administrators who spent the last two years trying to reshape institutions of higher learning into authoritarian spaces of exclusion and repression on behalf of right wing and tech elites. Your failed stewardship won't last.

Everyone in America is indebted to the people in Minneapolis who stood up alone to Trumpism when it was at full flood and blunted it, even sometimes at the cost of their own lives. mprnews.org/story/2026/11/03…

The people of Kansas made their voices heard, and I’m deeply honored by the trust Kansans placed in me to serve as your next governor. Whether I earned your vote or not, I will work for you.
Throughout this campaign, I heard from people who want their leaders to put politics aside and work together to deliver on the things that matter most: strong public schools, lower costs for our families and farmers, and an economy where every Kansan can get ahead.
I thank Senate President Ty Masterson for his service to our state and congratulate him on running a hard-fought campaign. In the days ahead, I look forward to working closely with Governor Laura Kelly to ensure a smooth transition and build on the progress our state has made.
Now, we move forward - together.

Kansas has a Democratic senator. The last time this happened, the Wizard of Oz hadn't even come out yet
