Today in the Finnish village of Tyrnävä a 4000m² potatoe storage caught on fire and more than 4 million kgs of potatoes was destroyed. That's over a quarter of Finlands seed potatoes.

It was marketed as:
- 2 years until permanent underclass
- you’ll all lose your jobs
- your skills will be worthless
- we’re going to replace you
- your entire career is now a $20/month subscription
All in an already terrible job market btw. Possibly the most important technology humanity has ever built, with some of the worst marketing imaginable. The labs completely failed communicating the tech, miserably bad and only improved just end of last year. How did anyone expect that to make people excited?

Sure, this is a bloodbath, but once again it's important for Republicans to remember that it was the price to pay for a war that was started for no reason and that accomplished absolutely nothing of value except killing a bunch of people and making everyone poorer.

Also, the Plaza Accords didnt kill Japan but The Bank of Japan's reaction to the Plaza Accords did.
Japan was less export dependent than the other Plaza Accord countries affected (France, UK, Germany). Only 14% of Japan's GDP was exports. The pop narrative was that Plaza overvalued currency killed Japanese competitiveness and exports. But as you said, Japan continued to grow in exports.
The real issue with Japan was the Bank of Japan slashing interest rates and the money went to real estate & stocks over manufscturing and infra. Then when Bank of Japan raised rates in the late 80s/ early 90s, the bubble popped.

All history is the history of technological diffusion through various means, episode 18.
“Tesla is like the Whampoa military academy of EVs.”
Still one of the best lines I’ve ever read on China tech.
Tesla didn’t just have a “catfish” effect on China’s EV industry. Its massive Shanghai Gigafactory had around 20,000 employees in 2023.
Tesla trained thousands of Chinese engineers and workers, many of whom went into China’s broader industrial ecosystem and helped to upgrade the capabilities of China’s EV industry.

This is a big theme in Chinese industrial policy discourse, especially the "industrial maximalism" school of thought popularized by Lu Feng.
The idea is that a rigid stratification of industries into "low", "middle" and "high" tech is rather harmful and does not really (1/n)

Close. France is a Heisenberg country: the more precisely you know its position on an issue, the less you know what it will actually do.

You must understand, France is the Schrödinger's cat of countries. It is simultaneously both the most right-wing and left-wing country in Europe, both the most innovative and most stagnant, the most complacent and most ambitious.
French President Macron:
China is massacring our industrial base — partly through innovation after Covid, but also by subsidizing its companies eight times the OECD average.
That is not acceptable. We are not respecting the rules of the game, and we are not protecting our companies.
We Europeans have been naive. We said: "We are open to everyone because we want to trade with others."
But in reality, we are doing much less trade with others.
