Indian authorities’ removal of over 130 million names from the country’s electoral rolls was arbitrary and deeply flawed. They first stripped millions of citizens of their right to vote and are now beating and jailing them for peacefully protesting. trib.al/XIK1xZi

Agree with Justice Oka. As long as cases can be moved from bench to bench by hand, every reassignment will be questioned...we’re seeing it now with Justice Kaul. A published, computer-run roster protects the CJI as much as the litigant.

Now even legacy media is challenging the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act which severely weakens people’s right to information and curtails press freedom. The petition terms the provisions of the Act as “pre-censorship which is anathema to any democracy”. The DPDP Act in its current form should be repealed!
EXCLUSIVE: India’s biggest news publishers including Ambani's Network18, Adani's NDTV, Indian Express, Times Internet & others mount the most high-profile challenge yet to Modi’s privacy law, warning it would “render investigative journalism a benign and neutered recorder of events.” DNPA (@publishers_news) has taken the law to the Supreme Court. They argue it would trample investigative work and let New Delhi identify journalists’ sources. The provisions “constitute pre-censorship which is anathema to any democracy worth its name,” the group’s 698-page filing says. The key concerns: 🔹 Consent: requiring a journalist to notify the subject of an investigation and seek consent “would allow that subject to destroy evidence, intimidate witnesses” 🔹 Erasure: people can withdraw consent and demand their data be erased, which the group says could force publishers to unpublish or heavily redact news reports 🔹 Sources: a “nakedly unguided” power to demand information that “can extend to privileged communications in possession of a reporter or the informant” In a letter to the government, the group said India “has chosen to grant broad exemptions to the state, while failing to extend any corresponding protection to the press.” reuters.com/business/media-t…

EC files an affidavit that everything CEC did had the approval of the whole commission. Totally false as exposed by the Indian Express, from the dissent notes of the other ECs & their complaint to the Cabinet Secretary. Gyanesh Kumar should be prosecuted for perjury too

‘I would take the ECI’s affidavit that claims decisions were unanimous with not just with a pinch of salt but a bagful of salt..’ senior advocate Dushyant Dave says he has lost faith in constitutional authorities who he says live in fear of the executive. Listen in . #SIRShowdown
"A pinch of salt? No, a bag full of salt." Senior advocate Dushyant Dave expresses a complete loss of faith in constitutional institutions as questions are raised over the EC’s claim that its SIR decisions were unanimous. How much trust can an institution command when its own credibility is under scrutiny? #ElectionCommission #SupremeCourt #IndianJudiciary #ConstitutionalBodies #EC #NewsToday | @sardesairajdeep

What a clever ploy by the Election Commission!! Now it hides behind “unanimous decisions” in the Supreme Court while staying completely silent on why two of its own Commissioners were kept in the dark….Remember..they had complained not only about the process but also about the definite decisions! Notes of objection, post-facto decisions taken in the Commission’s name without their knowledge, software changes and Form 6 alterations they only learnt from newspapers — all dismissed as non-decisions… Unity is being used as a convenient alibi. Accountability is not. The Supreme Court must not let this pass… #GyaneshKumar #ElectionCommission

It has begun. In Trilokpuri today, people are doing what the Election Commission never did: reading the deleted-voter lists line by line and checking their own names. This is what a public audit looks like. The voter list belongs to the people. #NoSIR #MakeSocialAuditsMandatory

EC refusing to name the software used to flag “errors” in voter rolls during SIR, citing “trade secrets n IPR… “ Yet it also claims “no new software has been developed or procured.” So what exactly is the secret tool that flagged crores of voters? In a democracy, tools deciding who stays on the electoral roll cannot be commercial secrets. Other counties like Estonia or Switzerland do disclose the same. And Brazil opens its systems to scrutiny. Our EC hides behind proprietary n confidential pretexts while crores are deleted or flagged. Opacity is not confidence building but it’s evasion or subversion! #SIR #ElectionCommission

While what @IJaising says is true, is it not a wake up call to the High Courts to be sensitive to all such cases brought before them relating to police brutality ? If they do not have the time, let them hand these cases over to the #DLSAs so that they effectively follow up on such cases. @peopleswatch @jaacttn
Absolutely true. The Delhi police brutally beat up protesters in buses & police stations. They first snatched the phones of the protesters, so that the criminal brutality could not be recorded. Though police stations are required to have CCTVs, police buses don’t.! They must also be required to have CCTVs
