Just completed a very strange and confused survey by @britishlibrary intended to inform its future strategy. Seems to be chiefly aimed at justifying selling off reading rooms. I'd urge everyone to complete it (open until 17 Nov): tinyurl.com/3v89mb3s

A gunman who killed four women and two men in Krakow on Saturday was fascinated by far-right ideology, the interior minister Marcin Kierwinski told a news briefing. “Everything points to the fact that the shooter was influenced by far-right ideology, a matter that will also be subject to investigation,” Kierwinski said.

Sound on please ! Hornbills are calling ! How many Great Hornbills are too many ! Surely never enough! A gathering like this is called a ‘congregation’, and what a stunning congregation this is ! Somewhere in in the Anamalai landscape in Tamil Nadu there is a precious stronghold for these iconic birds, whose future rests in the great old trees in the last remaining rainforests. These magical moments are captured by @dhanu_paran #GreatHornbills #Hornbills #wildlifeconservation #BirdsofIndia

Hi Folks, I've got the 2027 Larry Calendar ready now. I've had to increase the price to £17 this year as the supplier hiked the price up by £10 leaving me with no margin. bulk buying negates some of the rise but sadly not enough. The order form is here forms.gle/HUNcZdwGJsVVPJkPA

We are verified! ✅ WhyDonate reviewed my documents and reinstated my payouts. My fundraiser is real. I am Agle from Estonia. After years with a back condition and a bad accident in Aug 2025, I am fighting to save our home that is mortgaged. Home for me, 5 dogs (Mimmu/Chiu 14y, Sherlock, Bruno, Nolk, Mia) and 4 parrots (Rudy 22y, Miki, Paula, Emma). All rescues. A share is as big as a donation for us. 🙏 whydonate.com/fundraising/pl… #RescueDogs #Estonia #WhyDonate #SaveOurHome

🚨 BRITISH BACKPACKER AVOIDS IMMEDIATE JAIL AFTER TORTURING DOG FAITH TO DEATH IN AUSTRALIA Bradley Gavin Knoesen, 31, repeatedly submerged one-year-old kelpie Faith underwater before bludgeoning her to death with a glass bottle. After killing her, he tied her body to his motorbike and dragged her through bushland near Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The court heard Knoesen had consumed an “extreme amount of alcohol” before repeatedly forcing Faith underwater. She lost consciousness and was briefly revived before he struck her with the bottle. His cousin begged him to stop and wept uncontrollably as Knoesen repeatedly invited him to join in. Prosecutors said Knoesen wanted Faith’s owner to see what had happened to their “precious dog”. Magistrate Donna Webb described the prolonged cruelty as torture “beyond comprehension”, saying Knoesen appeared determined to kill Faith. She rejected intoxication as an explanation for his actions. Despite prosecutors pushing for immediate imprisonment, Knoesen received a 12-month suspended jail sentence at Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court. He had been in custody since the attack on September 23. His lawyer said he was likely to be deported from Australia, where he had worked as an underground truck driver. His defence described him as a “dog lover” and claimed the violence was out of character. Police prosecutor Amy Southall disagreed, describing his actions as “gratuitous and unnecessary”. Faith was just one year old. Source UK Database.

THE INSPECTOR WHO INSPECTED TOO HONESTLY Dr Shyam Kumar @ukorthopod is an orthopaedic surgeon. A good one. Unblemished record. So the Care Quality Commission (@CareQualityComm) recruited him as a part-time inspector to help hold NHS hospitals to account. He took the job seriously. Too seriously, it turns out. Between 2015 and 2019 he raised concerns about botched hospital inspections, a bullying culture inside the CQC itself, and a surgeon at Morecambe Bay whose hip replacement on an elderly patient left her unable to walk. He asked the CQC to review that surgeon's cases. He was told the trust did not want to do so for reputational reasons. A Royal College of Surgeons review later found problems with 26 out of 46 of that surgeon's operations. The CQC's response to Kumar? They called his concerns fanciful. They dug for dirt on him. Then they sacked him. In September 2022 a Manchester Employment Tribunal ruled he had been unfairly dismissed. The tribunal found his safety disclosures had directly influenced the decision to get rid of him. The judgment noted that CQC officials spent their energy gunning him down rather than focusing on patient safety. He was awarded £23,000 for injury to feelings. Not damages for a ruined career. Not accountability for the officials who ran the smear operation. Just £23,000 and a declaration. The CQC issued a statement saying it had learnt from the case and improved its processes. A decade earlier it said exactly the same thing after the Mid Staffordshire Public Inquiry found it had victimised its own whistleblowers then too. The system that was built to protect patients ran a seven-year campaign against the man raising the alarm. Then it said sorry and carried on. The Crown Estate is worth £16.7 billion making £1.2 billion in profit last year. They're chasing out the UK's oldest Indian restaurant, Veeraswamy. The Crown Estate wants to refurbish the building and create a larger entrance for offices upstairs, allowing it to charge higher office rents. It says the work requires removing Veeraswamy’s separate entrance and cannot proceed with the restaurant remaining there. Veeraswamy disputes that eviction is necessary. Its owners say they have offered to share the enlarged entrance, accommodate the works and match the rent expected from office tenants. The Crown Estate has rejected those alternatives. The estate has offered around £500,000 compensation, while the owners estimate relocating would cost £5 million. Labour keeps talking about reviving our high streets. Yet here is Veeraswamy, a cultural landmark with a century of history, facing eviction so its landlord can command higher office rents. It reflects a familiar problem across the country: the places that give our high streets their character are sacrificed for greater returns. If Labour is serious about revival, protecting that heritage should be part of it. Any plans to step in and help @RNBlake (if you aren't already)?
Veeraswamy, the famous century-old Indian restaurant in Regent Street, London, begins its court battle today against the Crown Estate, the King’s property manager, which wants to force it to move. Veeraswamy offers some of the best Indian cooking anywhere on earth.

New arrivals at Bradford Cat Watch Rescue and Sanctuary. This is a heartbreaking story. This is Jasper and Tabitha. They are around 12 years old and are desperately looking for a quiet home together. They have come to Bradford Cat Watch Rescue and Sanctuary as their elderly owner has had to go into a care home due to worsening dementia and sadly there is no family to care for them. They are such a sweet pair that simply need a loving quiet retirement home. If you feel you are the right fit for them and are ready to adopt please complete the pre adoption enquiry form by clicking the link below and quoting Jasper and Tabitha. bcwr-kittens.co.uk/adoption-…

The evacuation of five blocks of flats in Canning Town, east London, left at least 250 households and several businesses suddenly homeless. Prime Property Management, which manages the buildings, said engineers had identified an "imminent risk to life" linked to a transfer slab beneath the blocks. The firm has not responded to the BBC's request for comment. #Evacuation #London #Housing
