#MineAction leaves almost no margin for distraction. Fatigue, grief, family pressure, poor sleep or fear about events unfolding only kilometres away can all affect the concentration and judgement a deminer depends on to stay alive. That is why mental readiness has to be treated as part of operational safety, especially in #Yemen. shorturl.at/wVv9p

With 184,000+ people now displaced in #Yemen, roughly half from #Taiz, @CrisisGroup warns that many families remain unable to return even after fighting subsides near their homes, adding "newly emplaced landmines are another threat." Fresh #Houthi mine contamination is therefore extending the #humanitarian consequences of the current fighting well beyond the movement of the frontline. #MineAction #ProtectCivilians

For #MineAction teams, fresh #Houhi mine contamination in #Yemen means new survey, new tasking and new clearance across areas already burdened by years of explosive hazards. As territory changes hands, both the operational burden and the risk to civilian life increase, with every newly laid #landmine creating another barrier to safe return.

Recent footage from newly retaken areas of #Yemen shows dense anti-tank #landmine belts, camouflaged #IEDs and newly laid contamination in areas already affected by years of #conflict. The visible mines are only part of the problem: #Houthi mine-laying has repeatedly included irregular, unmarked and unpredictable emplacement that complicates survey, clearance and civilian movement. #MineAction

The past year has seen a weakening of the international norm against the use of anti-personnel landmines. This could expand the scale and distribution of mine contamination, with long-term impacts for affected regions. This new blog by Hana Manjušak and Dr Barbara Magalhães Teixeira explores how #ClimateChange and landmine contamination can interact to create new risks. Reports that #Houthi forces are laying new #landmines in previously cleared civilian areas risk turning temporary #displacement into something far longer. Project Masam teams are prepared to re-clear affected areas so families can return home, recover land and livelihoods, and rebuild daily life more safely. #MineAction #SaveLives shorturl.at/qrmvw

New report by the Protection Cluster says 1,455 incidents related to explosive ordnance have been recorded in the Occupied Palestinian Territory since October 2023, causing 1,175 injuries and 280 deaths as of September 2026, according to @UNMAS. Explosive ordnance contamination is not a one-time threat. Civilian harm extends far beyond the moment of attack, undermining safety, prolonging displacement, delaying recovery, and preventing communities from rebuilding their lives. Clearance is only one part of reducing #risk. Alongside operations north of Al-Makhazin, in Hajjah, Project Masam teams have been working with #farmers and herders to identify suspected hazardous areas and avoid them until survey and clearance are complete. That combination of clearance and #explosive ordnance #awareness helps protect lives, livestock and livelihoods. More: shorturl.at/7pURY #Yemen #EORE
