Improving outcomes for mothers and babies starts with addressing the gaps in maternity care. Assistant Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Scott Barnett, Ph.D., is leading research on a potential drug that could prevent and stop preterm labor. The research could offer new hope for families, particularly those in maternity care deserts where access to specialized care may be limited. In Nevada, about one in nine births are preterm. In 2024, approximately 3,500 babies were born preterm or very preterm in the state. Scott and his team are exploring whether existing FDA-approved drugs could be repurposed to address this critical gap. Long before Tugba Selvi was using mass spectrometry to identify molecules made by bacteria, she was a child in a small town in Tekirdag, Turkey, who wanted to be a teacher. Today, Selvi is a fourth-year doctoral student in the Department of Chemistry in @UNRScience, where she pursues that dream alongside a second passion she discovered here: research. #FacesOfThePack bit.ly/4hKDwRV

Understanding why elk are dying could provide clues about wildlife health across the West. One of our master's students, Ava Window, and fellow researchers are investigating an unusual pattern of springtime elk deaths in the Independence and Tuscarora mountains north of Elko. “What’s puzzling is that the elk are dying during a season when conditions should be working in their favor,” Window said. “That’s when there’s the most forage available to them, that’s when they’re having their calves, that’s when the males are growing their antlers.” In some years, 10% to 30% of collared females in the affected population have died. By investigating these deaths, researchers hope to better understand what is affecting this herd and uncover broader insights into wildlife health across the West.
